Default Yikes! Cost of Diastat

I found some Diastat at Walgreens today so I went to pick it up. The script was written for two boxes - so 4 Diastat 10 mg each. This is the first Diastat that we've filled since they switched to the Accudial...how stupid is that idea anyway?

But anyway...does anyone know the cost of 4 Diastat??? $749!!! Yes, that's approximately $187 for each 10 mg of Valium. I also picked up 10 2mg tablets of Valium - those were only $9.99. So obviously it's not the Valium that costs so much..it's their packaging.

I'm still stunned...and VERY grateful for insurance...

Holy Cow! I just picked up six of them! I did not realize the cost. I am also greatful for insurance!

I have never understood the accudial concept. Why didn't they just keep the suppositories?

Wow! I guess I didn't pay attention when I picked mine up. I do remember our neuro commenting when they went to Accudial as a way to make more money....

You'd be even more shocked if you knew the actual net price of the diazepam. 28 2mg diazepam tablets cost £1.46, and a 10mg tube of rectal solution costs £1.87.

I have to speak today at our company meeting since they are sponsering a Rileys team for the Fall Stroll for Epilepsy that is one of the things I did last night was to add up how much we would have to pay if we didn't have insurance to cover her seizure meds. the majority of the money raised is going to the medication fund for people who don't have medicaid or private insurance.

The total was exactly $1308.25 for all her meds, including her Diastat and Ativan- and I only added each one in once, even though we could use to scripts of the diastat in a month very easily.

diastat alone was 376.99

THANK GOODNESS for insurance!

We have a compounding pharmacy nearby, and a really nice pharmacist. he said he could make an equivalent of Diastat for about $10 a dose.

Also, last time we checked (3 years ago) Athena, the make of Diastat, would replace expired Diastat free each year. They say they're happy if it doesn't get used. Worth a check. And you're right, it's about 99% packaging and insurance against liability.
