Default Roll Call - May 2007

Happy May Day!!

April showers bring May flowers. Well...almost. We are in the middle of a major thunderstorm right now [4/30 11:45pm], but I took this picture on Saturday as I was cleaning out our flower bed.

We're trying to get back in to the swing of real life after coming back from vacation - ughhhh.

My heel made it thru several thousand miles of walking. Actually, it was better than I expected it to be. I was to have a followup appt with the Ortho on the Friday before we left, but....there was a scheduling problem and the doctor was at a clinic 30 miles away from the location I was at. So, I made a 40 mile round trip for nothing. Funny thing...I was going to cancel the appt...I guess I should of.

How 'bout the rest of y'all ~ fall out for Roll Call!

For those of you just tuning in, Roll Call is chance to introduce yourself, check-in and let everyone know how you're doing, what you're up to, to touch base...something, anything, just let us know you're still around

Here...

Not much going on here. Husband thought he was getting his 4th wisdom tooth (when he had his out, the oral surgeon said my hubby only had 3 & that the 4th wisdom tooth may or may not come in at a later time). It turned out to be a small cyst instead - no surgery needed, much to his relief!

Happy May Day!

April showers brought some April flowers too. We had some heavy rains here a few weeks ago and they flowers sprung up in the yard, never seen them before. I walked around and dug them all up and moved them to the flower beds. They looked like violets, yet not. Very pretty yellow, like they were waxed. I took a leaf and a flower to a greenhouse and found out they are Marsh Marigolds, rarely seen around here anymore. I guess the rains brought them back to life. They look beautiful, they are tubers so they did very well being transplanted. I love flowers. I have moonflowers and angel trumpets growing inside for summer too.

I am going to Michigan next week for my nephews wedding. Can't wait to see my kids and grandkids, but I certainly am not looking forward to the drive. Takes me weeks to recover from those trips!

I have an appt with an endo on May 17th, seems my thyroid decided to join in on all the fun inside!

We are here. DH and I just got back from a long weekend to Chicago to celebrate our 15 year anniversary. I love Chicago and we had such a good time. We went to Maggiano's to eat - they didn't even blink an eye when I mentioned gluten free!! It was that way with all the restaurants we ate at. Very nice!

May is hectic for us - next week our 13 year old goes to D.C. for one week. While she's gone, on May 12th we have a family wedding of which DH and Little Ellie are both in. That will leave Michael and I sitting in the pew. We still have to figure out food for that day. Since both DH and Ellie are in the wedding we have to be at the church at 1:30 but the wedding doesn't start till 4, plus we have pictures afterward. It will be an interesting day.

Anyway, my little brother-in-law is graduating from high school this month and our 13 year old is graduating from 8th grade (yikes - am I that old - to have a high schooler!) My parents will be in town from Michigan for the last week of May so they can go to her graduation.

It will be June before I know it. The good thing is all the kids are now healthy and everyone is doing well. It has been a long time since I have been able to say that!!

Greetings All,

The snow has finally stopped and the daffs have bloomed. We, our neighborhood, lost power for a day or 2 and many in Maine for a week due to the Patriot's Day Storm, (2 weeks ago) but the clean-up continues and 12 counties are in disaster mode. Some of our beaches are dramatically changed- some are no longer there.

About me- I have "many arrows- none sharp." I'm a teacher by trade until a few years ago when I decided I needed a change. Currently I am part of an Organic Farmers group in Maine, bringing teas and needle felted dolls to the market. We open in a few weeks and this year I will also offer gluten free baked goods- from a dedicated gluten free kitchen.

My GS clean-up continues. This is month 7 for me. I attend a IMT/PT center that addresses GS/enteropathy. They've already completed the cecum restoration, thymus, small intestine and liver. Two weeks ago we began the sigmoid colon and things are better than ever. Even my hyper-sensitivity to airborn gluten is improving. In the past month, have gone to dinner at the homes of two friends and not gotten glutenized. This feels like genuine improvement.

My family is dh, ds, ddoggie and me. Ds is 17 and dx with HS (hidradenitis suppurativa) his bolis are responding well to a gluten free diet- no new boils since becoming GF in late March. Ddoggie has stopped licking her paws all day long since becoming GF in December we all sleep better too, minus the sounds of unrelenting paw licking.

Here's to much better living in the days and months ahead for all!
Cheers!
Leslie

I'm here. Not much is new.

My mom is hanging in there... she has mostly not very good days, but a few better ones.

My son is getting married next month, so I've been busy outfitting the family with appropriate wear. Fashion and shopping... NOT my favorite things. Thankfully, my daughters like to shop . I'm working on plans for the rehearsal dinner... our duty.

I was relieved to find out that this weird lump at the base of my daughter J's middle finger appears to be a harmless cyst. If it doesn't disappear in another month or two, it will have to be surgically removed...but the important thing is they believe it is just a ganglion cyst sort of thing. It felt like bone to me, but it was x-rayed, and it is not.

I've really enjoyed the few nice weather day teases... and am looking forward to more of them. I like to be outside without a jacket! I am getting back into my walking routine, thanks to our new puppy..who is seven months old already! I'll see if I can find an updated picture.

Ah... and today is my hubby's birthday.. so I think I will take that opportunity to visit The Outback SteakHouse (instead of cooking)...his favorite place. And buy him some new jeans (that don't have holes in them ).

Cara

I am here. Today I am shopping for some plants for the garden. I think spring is here to stay.

We are all doing well. I am slowly learning the rules of women's lacrosse. My daughter is on the high school team. Last night she got to do "the thing in the middle of the field" after each goal. I was later told it is called a draw (sort of like a face off in hockey).

My older son finally decided on where to go to college. He chose a small honors state school that is only 2 hours away. I am really glad. I think it will be a great match for him.

Eric went to outdoor ed with his 6th grade class last month. He brought all of his food (7 meals) and had a great time. When I asked him if he felt badly because he could not eat what everyone else had he said "No, their food looked disgusting!"

Happy Spring!!!

Hi everyone! I started working in mid-Feb to obtain family health coverage. Nearly six weeks ago I was able to drop down to 20 hours per week and retain health bennies! Yea! So I still consider myself a ‘mostly’ SAH, HS mom.

7yo ds picked lots of morel mushrooms in our woods the other day. He loves to eat them too! Sauteed in olive oil. Ewww! I was raised eating them heavily-battered and deep-fried! LOL

We may have found part of the problem here. I think I mentioned that dh has taken over quite a bit of the cooking since I went back to work (when my fatigue worsened). Well, I discovered that he has not been washing the bulk bin rice and buckwheat groats before cooking them! I’m thinking we could have a possible cross contamination issue…?

We started back on probiotics this week too. I finally found some vegan/gf for me and some vegan/gf/corn-free/soy-free for ds! Actually I found them a while back – I just waited to order them until my favorite on-line retailer got them in for me!

Alas, Kim I just cannot fathom how to go about doing an elimination diet. I can count on one hand the number of foods my son eats “solo”. Heck, even with apples, he insists on eating them with nut butter or cinnamon! Almost everything we eat is a combination of multiple ingredients. I am toying with the idea of doing it for just me…I can eat apples plain.

Default May Roll Call

I'm here, but not here. I started passing a 5ml kidney stone Monday morning at 2 am. So, I spent the day in bathroom and in pain. I ended up at the ER from 5pm - midnight. The good news is that as of 7pm last nite it is past the long tube and is making it's way into the bladder. So the hard part (knock on wood) is over.

This was my first so I had no idea how painful these were or how sick they could make you. Makes me wonder if I have been passing smaller ones all along and just attributing it to IBS and a UTI.

Hopefully, the infection from the kidney stone explains my fatigue lately. My sister had one 7 ml 2 weeks ago and said she felt run down the week before hers tried to pass and got stuck.

On a lighter note, my son will be home for 2 weeks in May.

And I've noticed that even though I am exhausted, my body does not feel jittery anymore. It's so nice not having gluten in my diet.

Have a wonderful May ..... Marcia

Good to hear from all of you.

Marcia, hope the kidney stone passes quickly - OUCH!

No big news from Arkansas. Spring is here. Bought some flowers to plant. Will be heading to Washington DC for a vacation with my DH and then I head to the GIG meeting in Richmond in June. Noticed today that GIG now has a recipe site. You can look without registering. There is a link on the home page www.gluten.net

KC, my Cairn terrier is doing great on her GF diet. She has a long way to go but she can now go up stairs, is alert and wants to play.
