Default Windows 7 anyone?

I have been using windows 7 now threw the beta and rc, on my second computer without a single problem. So the other day I decided to install it on my main computer, and now I figured out why they named it windows 7, as it takes 7 times reinstalling it to get it working , I had to install the darn thing 5 times because every time I would be half way threw installing drivers and would get the blue screen of death, and it was easier to just start over .
So, I have it going good, everything seems to be working great, so I pop in a dvd I just rented, kick back and relaxe, and guess what, windows wont let me play any dvd threw any program becaues it says I dont have permision because of copy protection
So far my impression on using windows 7 so far is, it is like having a Ferrari with a motor in it from a Ford Pinto, as long as it looks great, right?

Smile works for me

Hi,

I ran the W7 beta and now am running the RC1 version (dual boot with vista 64 bit).

Like you I am running it on a "modern" quad core cpu with lots of ddr2 ram.

On my system it plays DVDs just fine.

Given the error message your setup generated I suspect that your media player is set to "rip" to the hard drive, rather than simply "play". This would explain the "copy protection" message and failure to play.

I dunno about you but I am lovin Win 7 and have pre-ordered two copies (one for me, one for the wife) with the discount we were offered !

oh, yeah Win 98 SE was great ....I used it for many years....but I am finding the newer operating systems to be "smarter" more capable and in many ways easier to use.

well, being that it was running good on my other computer, I am thinking it is just issues with the drivers, maybe once it is around for some time and they get all the bugs worked out of the drivers, it will probably run good then. Right now I think it is pretty hit and miss if you can get it running good, depending on what hardware you have and drivers you need for it.
I got dvds to play, but still cant play blu-ray movies, no matter what software I use. Also cant get my case lcd to work, or the creative sound card to work right, ugh, it is like trying to install Linux. Just going to switch back to vista and just have to wait some time before they get around to getting the drivers right.

Smile Yup

I think you're right...

there's a lot to be said for waiting until they have more of the bugs worked out, especially in the area of driver availability.

I had been sticking with XP pro all this time and had only messed with Vista as the RC1 release and on other people's systems. A recent system upgrade "came with" Vista...and here I am.

I'm finding hardware incompatibilities with my equipment (printer, scanner, router) on Vista but most of it seems to work just fine on Win 7.

Go figure ?

A few more months and I'll switch over to W7 completely and won't have to troubleshoot my Vista drivers problems. In the mean time I created a virtual machine setup of my old XP Pro install to run hardware as necessary.

I don't have any blu-ray devices so I can only envy your difficulties in playing them

regards

I've just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7, and of course I skipped Windows Vista because it was RUBBISH!!
I'm quite amazed with how good its running, and that it detected 90% of all of my system drivers, which is first. I run a 4 year old Sony VGC-V2M with 2Gb RAM with a P4 3GHz CPU. One little thing that I have noticed with Windows 7, is that the desktop looks more like the KDE desktop on Ubuntu which is quite nice.
I also write software in VB.net and C# and it runs smoothly under the new release of Windows 7.

I am soooo pleased with Billy "Bob" Gates for getting it right at last!!

So many problems.
All my windows using friends, complain about their experiences.
I did too.
Until I went BACK to Apple.
I will never use anything MS again.
It's been ten years, since I've had ANY MS Software on any of my Macs, and, if anyone wanted to, or, for some reason thought they hadto, can run windows very nicely on their Mac.
It's just a better machine.
And, the TCO taken into consideration, they're far less expensive.

Just no valid reason to not run a Mac.

Pete

JMHO, let the stoning begin..

I had to be dragged away from 98 kicking and screaming. Now running XP home edition, never has worked well. Until I accidentally downloaded IE 8, at which point it went completely kaflooie. Sigh.

I never use anything until it has been out for a year or two. Let other people have all the problems.

What I would really like to go back to is DOS 3.3 because I understood it. Surfing the internet with DOS and LYNX worked just fine.

Hello,

I can see this forum is a frenetic beehive of activity. Given this, one might anticipate a worldwide audience of thousands hanging on their every word !

While this is a lot of pressure for a "home user" such as myself I am going to go ahead and post.

Windows 7 has arrived.

On the phone I walked my aged father through an upgrade install from Vista Home Premium 32bit to Win7 Home Premium 32bit on an HP laptop.

The upgrade went without incident and he is happily using Win7 the last few days.

I received my copies yesterday... I know you are all excited for me !

I'm waiting for an opportune moment to upgrade the machines at my house. Since we've been using the RC1 version for months I guess there's no real hurry.

ok
wrap it up

nothing further
out
