Ok, first a friend of my mom's has a question. Her son and his wife are expecting (due in Feb) and found out last week on ultrasound that the baby has two problems that are evident. His intestine is external, abdominal wall is closed already. Also, they found a cyst in his brain (baby's that is!). My mom's friend can't remember what kind of cyst right off hand, but I thought I would ask if someone has a good website or something I can steer her toward. I am going to see if she will find out what kind of cyst it is again so I can help them get info. Any great info sites you all know of?

Also, Megs' lab work yesterday revealed this: Yesterday = high white count, low sodium. Today = low creatinine and low potassium. Any idea what this could be from? Her doctors are kinda saying "I dunno" so I am feeling like we could be missing something. If there is something that they aren't telling me I don't like that either. I had to track down her gp and her neuro today, so that made me crazy. She is absolutely pissed. She can't walk, can't balance well, and is just yucky feeling yet.

I can't help with the cyst, but one of my best friends has a little boy who was born with a condition called gastroschisis where the intestines are on the outside of the body. The University Med Center in Omaha has one of the top intestinal rehab programs in the country--so if they haven't spoken to anyone there yet it might be good for them to look into (assuming they are in NE). I'll give my friend a call and see if she has some resources/web sites I can get for you!

If you can find out the name of the cyst, I might have a few links you
can check out. Just let me know, okay?:)

Yes Lori, they are in NE. I will let mom know about UNMC's rehab. I think she said they would be delivering at Methodist so the baby can be in Children's NICU.

I told mom to find out what kind of cyst they are looking at. Hopefully her friend will remember this time so I can do some digging! 'Preciate it!

There are MANY different kinds of cysts that can be found in the brain. A friend of mine had two children with choroid plexus cysts, and in both cases the cysts went away on their own before birth. So a cyst can be a total non- issue. My son has an arachnoid cyst, which also can be a non-issue depending on the location and size. My son's cyst is a midline cyst and although it was large at birth, it was not causing any issues so they left it alone. He just started having symptoms last spring (he is 6), and when they did the MRI they found that it was bigger than a baseball, causing a midline shift, and displacing most of the left side of his brain. He had a shunt placed in June.

So... my point is that there is likely no need to panic about the cyst yet. If they find that it is an arachnoid cyst, I can give you some links for info.

Yes, there are many types of brain cysts. If it is an arachnoid cyst, I have a wealth of info!
