Hi There!

Surprise, I have another question. One of the (many) things that showed up on my MRI was a vertebral hemangioma, does anyone have more info on this. I saw the picture of it, it looks like a honeycomb and is 4.3cm.

Thanks again,
FLGIRL

FL GIRL,
I don't have any first hand knowledge about this but it did pique my curiosity so I googled it and found plenty of info. about it.
you might try doing a search until someone with more knowledge comes along.
lots of luck,
Linda

Thank you Lisa and Linda!

I did try to research it but, I kept getting conflicting info about it. I thought maybe the doctor or someone else who has this would have more info. Some sites say to treat some say do NOT treat, very confusing.

Thank you for your support, it means a lot to me.

They are usually not symptomatic, and are supposedly congenital (there from birth) and found incidentally on film.

I have two big ones, one in the tspine, and one in the lspine (not symptomatic).

Although most docs will tell you that they do not cause symptoms, if they grow large enough, or eat away at the vertebra, they could easily cause problems.

I do know of a poster (here at BT/long timer) that insisted that her doc do a bone scan because she had great pain coming from the level of her vertebral hemangioma and was surprised that her doc went along with it. I don't know how it ended, but do know that the tumor was benign (if memory serves me right). My doc told me that the hemangiomas were the least of my problems, so we take a look at them ever so often, usually when doing MRI. If the lesion were within the spinal cord, the ball game would be totally different.

Google "vertebral hemangioma" and you will find all kinds of info.

Incidentaloma. Extremely unlikely to be a pain generator. Not impossible, but a normal appearing disc on MRI is 100x more likely to be causing pain than a hemangioma.

Hi FLGIRL,
I've never replied on the chronic pain forum but do come here occasionally just to read, since I do....have chronic pain.:) I just happened to come this evening to read and saw your post. I also have a hemangioma in my t-spine. It was found several years ago when I had an MRI for something else. The doctor didn't even tell me about it- I wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't have asked for a copy of the radiologist's report like I always do. It freaked me out but the doctor and every other one that I've asked about it since didn't seem concerned about it at all and have all told me it wouldn't be the cause of my pain (don't know what I think about that though...). The dr. told me that about 11% of the population have them but most people don't know it unless they're like me and have an MRI for something else. Otherwise, they said they're only found during autopsy. It's my understanding that they're basically a benign blood tumor- but maybe someone else has a better explanation of it than I do.

Hi Everyone!

Well, I don't know if the vertebral hemangioma is causing any pain. But, I DO KNOW I have severe lower back pain. I have been in pain management for over 7 years. I have been diagnosed with mulitiple conditions concerning my back. I also had 2 disc fused in my neck back in 1998.

Take care and thanks for all the info!
