Thank you, everyone, for your good thoughts and well wishes - I've been passing them along to Sharon every time I go see her! :D
When last we spoke, Sharon was unable to do much more than wiggle a couple of her toes slightly and had diminished sensation. The foot itself was flaccid (basically paralyzed).
She met with the orthopedic surgeon on Saturday, and he ordered a back brace - a custom-molded hard plastic thing that makes her look like Xena...<G> She got it yesterday afternoon. By last night, she already had a significant improvement in sensation and was starting to recover spontaneous movement (moving away when I tickled her foot)!
I'm told that surgery is being put on hold - I still haven't spoken with the surgeon, but as Sharon's PoA, he OUGHT to be including me in the process. He is going to hear from me that I am upset and feeling intentionally left out of this, which is not cool when someone (Sharon) is aphasic and confuses yes and no and has a friggin' POWER OF ATTORNEY IN PLACE FOR A REASON!!!!! end rant He tends to be very conservative in treatment, which is fine. I just want the opportunity to discuss it with him, ya know? OTOH, it shows just how much Sharon's improved, if he feels she's *capable* of participating in a decision like that without me being present. Sniffle...<G>
Today, the brace was adjusted - it needed to be shaved in a couple of spots, but they did an excellent job of molding it to *her* body! This afternoon, less than 24 hours after first putting the brace on, she had nearly normal sensation in the leg *and* foot *and* could move her foot purposefully from side to side! YIPPEE!!!
All signs point to a full recovery of function and hopefully a pretty signficant *improvement* in posture, balance, gait, and movement!
She was evaluated today for a possible stint in the first rehab unit she was in - this is where they got her back up on her feet and walking. She knows them, they know her, and they'll be able to get her more fine-tuned. I'll find out tomorrow, but we're hoping she'll be accepted and moved possibly Wednesday. I don't care for the doctor (he doesn't like me, either, so we're even on that score), but the nurses and aides and *almost* all the therapists are wonderful and a credit to their professions.
Will let you know as soon as I hear anything!
So, from the Little Duplex Near the Corner, this is Mikki, tiredly signing off for tonight!
