I have two questions. First has anyone else gotten kidney stones? I just found out I have 2 kidney stones. Just wondering if all the meds over all these years for my neck pain could have any thing to do with that?
Also my other question is about the meds I take. I take Gabapentin & Tramadol & some time darvocet. I just had to do a urine test for a new job is there any way I wouldnt pass it because of these meds? I just really worry about that.
Thanks

It depends what drugs they are testing for. I failed my test because my opiates showed up but the next step is to talk with their doctor. I explained what I took and why, she cleared me and I got the job. Good luck

Usually they will ask you to list any medicines you are taking. Bring your pill bottle in as well - to show you have a valid prescription.
As long as you do that - it should be fine. They are testing usually for illegal substances. Or legal ones that you don't have a script for.
Good luck!

Hi Debbie!
The law varies by state. I used to work in HR and we were only allowed to check for illegal substances. With the new HIPPA Laws they (the drug testing) are not allowed to ask you what you are taking as far as Rx's. Usually they will fax a sheet of paper with a list of say things like cocaine, pot, ect to the potential employer. This law has changed very recently and if something weird comes up the lab are supposed to contact you dicrectly.

Even in states that only allow drug testing for illigal drugs if you are on opiates it will show up and some narcotics do to because there is a street drug that is the same chemical structure. As long as you can verify your condition and prescriptions you should be okay.

Mark you're 100% right about that one, they do check for opiates. However with a valid prescription then you should be just fine.
Now to your second question......I don't know if the meds can cause kidney stones. I do know that some of the meds can cause liver damage. Have you seen a urologist yet? That might need to be the next doctor you see.

Hi Mark!
You are absolutely correct. However, if any prescription opiate is found in your sample, the lab MUST contact you FIRST, they are NOT allowed to share this info with the employer, as long as you have a valid medical condition treated by a physician. This is according to the HIPPA Law. When I was employed we had random drug test, and since I worked in HR, I saw my report before anyone else because they came straight to me. And, I was on Duragesic and Dilaudid (still am).
Take care and nice to meet you,

As an expert in the field of UDS: you should list all medications you are taking and when you last took them. Legally or not legally, if you are hiding something from the testing company- you have already failed the test.
Most testing only tests the Federal 5 - amphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, PCP, and opioids. Less rigorous testing is done by urine dipstick and this is the type of testing that can easily be defeated by many over the internet available methods. THere is also a lot of false positive and false negative due to other medications.
GC/MS testing is much more accurate and thus more expensive.
Depending on who is giving you the test, Darvocet will not show up on an opioid assay. It needs to be specifically requested ahead of time.

If you are being tested, make sure you listed all the medications that you, take, also the prilosac, Nexium, Cymbalta, Zyprexa, and if you had recent dental work too.
Depending on the testing, if it is dip sticks, not very reliable, it is looking for metabolites not the actual opiad as Cocain can show up but you had dental work.
If you take Cold medicine like Nyquill nighttime or any medication with alcohol in it that can show for alcohol testing too. List everything you take, even if it is ginkoba!
Our large X 12 meds test we gave showed the tummy med testing postive for marjuana. We had to have the scientest retest with the information of medications and test not for metabolite, go for the real thing.
This was for court purposes and had to be mega right.
If you are being tested, I would recommend the same day you have another test done at your doctors. Ask for a GOOD test. This will protect you from a bad dip stik showing metabolites and messing up a job potental.
SOmetimes I have seen many drug test on people taking medications not even show up on a doctors test, thus making it appear that they are not taking their medication. But, it was the sensitivity of the dip test being poor.
IF someone is testing a lot of people the cheaper the test, it is feast or famon...follow up with your own to protect yourself.

Wow Dianne did I read this right? You took a medication for your stomach and tested positive for marajuana?
I never knew these tests were so far off!! I've never been tested for the use of my medications at my doctors office BUT it does bring up the question, what if I was? I often have an upset stomach and will take something for it. Would my doctor think that I was illegally using drugs with my medications? This is a scary topic for sure.

Many of the urine dipstick tests yield false positives. This could be from poppy seeds testing positive for opioids (see Mythbusters), or Protonix testing positive for marijauna.
Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry testing is the confirmatory testing done by reputable labs and will elimante these issues. My office sends out urine for these studies directly. We do not bother with urine dipsticks. And no, second hand smoke will not turn marijauna positive. So don't give me that excuse- about once every two weeks I do hear it.

Thanks for all the replies. I did try to tell the people doing the urine test about the meds I take & they just said if there is a problem we will call you. They never called & I did get the job I wanted, so guess all was good.
Thanks again.
