I've spent a couple of hours typing - Opisthotonus and (the name of an illness or disease - which mainly affects the nerves) into the Google search. The research I've done over the past few years in books, found some illnesses and conditions which displays Opisthotonus - but in Google, I've found many - and many are on BT in General Subjects. Information said that "Opisthotonus is a rarely reported clinical manifestation." Maybe it's more common than is thought. When I suffered it in 1997, I didn't know what it was. I didn't go to the doctor. I didn't know anything about medical terminology. No-one was with me.
I've read where some babies can display it soon after birth. Maybe babies and children suffer it without being noticed. Maybe adults suffer it and like me, didn't realise what was happening. By the time I displayed neurological symptoms, I had all but forgotten the arching of my back. It was 4 years after the episode, I discovered the name, and a possible cause. It was another year before I came across a diagram of a person having an attack.

Opisthotonus - is an arching of the back, thought to be caused by a toxin.
I suffered Opisthotonus for several seconds in 1997, two years after an horrific head and spinal injury. My back arched, I went numb, couldn't move, had pins and needles. Many times I had cramps and my arms felt dead at night time. I didn't worry too much about it. It was when I started to become ill in 2001 - with what I later found to be neurological symptoms - that I started to become worried. I had all sorts of tests, MRI's etc. Nothing was found to cause my symptoms.

An Osteopath in 2001, said that my back muscles were "all knotted up." He was feeling my spine, so I guess my spinal muscles were all knotted up. I'm certain that would have been caused by the arching of my back. But why didn't knotted up back muscles show up in any of my MRI's ? If a doctor or anyone else isn't present, or doesn't observe a person suffering this - they wouldn't know it happened. I wasn't worried about my many symptoms, until 4 years after, when I began having spasms in my spine, horrific cramps, involuntary movements, facial grimaces etc. - symptoms I've found which cross over many different illnesses and conditions.
A writer on BT recently, said their head turned to the side. Mine does also - and my head also tilts back. I believe this was caused by the arched back stretching the muscles way out of place - which eventually caused damage to my nervous system, to cause the neurological symptoms.

I wonder if anyone will look up - Opisthotonus and (whatever their diagnosis). It would be interesting to see how many people remember having an arched back - or some condition years ago which may display opisthotonus. I'm NOT saying this is the cause of anyone's illness or condition - but you never know. From my research, anything is possible.
