This week looks like it will bring a killing frost to my farm and it is close to the end of my very active farming year. My saturday morning farmers' markets have maybe 3 weeks left to run for me.
Since I lost 10 pounds this summer I am lookng for something physical to do over the winter. There is a Pilates studio right around the corner and I thought I would wander over. I know there are different types of Pilates--some using machines and some not using machines. Any info on what I should look for will help.

Because of my osteoporosis, my PT wants me using only the yellow or red tubing. She says the blue is too much tension and could cause stress fractures. Don't know how old you are or what your risks are with this. have you checked with your doc to see what is recommended for exercise for you?
I'm starting a water program on a regular basis as I have one hip and knee that look like they might need replacement and there is less impact on the joints in the water.
Congrats on the weight loss!

Hi Linda,
I use regular Pilates video tapes of Winsor Pilates when I'm feeling more normal, right now I have a lot of spasticity pain though.
But it has done wonders for me, increasing my core strength, even the neuro noticed my increased strength on examination.
I have good and bad times though, and right now I am lucky to exercise once a week, but in good times I can do these pretty well, and they help a lot.
I don't have experience with a studio, but I might like that if it were available nearby.
Take care,
Ewizabeth

I am a MAJOR fan of pilates. Off and on I take pilates classes at my local YMCA and at times I use my pilates DVDs. I have only done the mat pilates, as opposed to the pilates "machine."
It helps greatly with stretching stiff areas and increasing strength.

Has anyone tried pilates on the ball? It's interesting but not for me. I will stick with yoga. I had one pilates teacher that I really liked since then I have not ofund another.
good luck

I just tried first class. It was a mat class. There was some work on the ball, one part I adapted and did on the floor. It was good. A lot of things are things I've worked on in Physical Therapy-core strength and pelvic stability... I was right in front of the heater which was off when I got there but kicked on and made room hot-at which point I noodled. Next time I will park myself far away from heat. Clearly has potential.

I am planning to call the instructor I was told about but..the farm had not quite called it quits for the year! I just finished washing the peanuts! (They grow under the ground--like potatoes--and we have a lot of mud!)
Actually, we are having guests for the 2 weekends after this one.I am trying to at least vaccum and dust but, a farming season's worth of clutter and mess is tough to get organized. So, no pilates yet but lots of house cleaning.
Well, pilates will be an interesting new adventure for SSusan and for me...we'll keep everyone posted.
Hope it helps as it has for ewizabeth and Linda.
Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm encouraged.

I have some Pilates DVDs that I like to use when I have the energy...also YOGA. Since I am home I don't use that machine but do use some resistance bands sometimes.
I love using a balance ball to exercise with!
