Ya know how I swore no more dogs, welllllllll, don't ask but - I came upon a poodle mix that needs a home, is super sweet, and actually looks a bit like a polar bear cub - it's so cute. It's got a strange double kink in it's tail, I think it must have been slammed in a door at some time. Poor little guy.

Well, I brought it up to dh, assuming he'd say no and that'd be that. Instead, he got all happy, asked how we could combine the names of our dogs that have passed on, then started getting all smiley saying it was like there'd be a new baby here soon. Who is this man?

So, my whole thing, is I want this pup to be a part of the family, I'm going to get a carrier with soft sides like you can take on planes, cause I want it to go fishing and to the store and everywhere with us. I've thought of Paly, Manny (so he has good self esteem, hee hee), Buddy, but I'd love to think of a family friendly name that also reminds me of a polar bear. I don't like Bear or Polar. And combining our last dogs names is Coolio or Cooley. This is our first true family dog (the others were with me alone, then dh came, then the kids so they were overly attached to me only). Wolfie was another name I thought of, but he doesn't look like a wolf.

Name ideas?

Winnie the Pooh-dle. A bear and a poodle combined!

Hee hee, I thought of Pooh Bear. I keep thinking of so many names, I can't keep track.

I'd name him Eskimo, but that's kind of long to say. Nanuq is 'polar bear' in Eskimo.

you could name him Eskimo and call him Kimo?

Yeah, I thought about that nickname, but it sounds like cancer treatment.

Maybe Igloo/Iggy, maybe Nanuq but I'd spell it Nanook, Nookie would be an ok nickname, reminds me of love :D

Flurry? Eh, we'll figure it out. But I'd love to hear ideas. For some reason this morning I thought he looked like a 'Beezer' but I have no idea what a beezer is. I thought of Pez too, I like stuff that's fun to say.

"Banjo" is a cute small fluffy dog name. BTW, dogs respond best to names with a "hard" consonant sound at the first of the name. Of course, eventually they respond to almost anything as all of our pets have nicknames and they've learned them all.

Have fun with the new addition. We got a new kitten (6 mos) at Xmas and my dd has really enjoyed her.

Names that deal with Alaska because it is cold: Balto, Nanuk, Sakari, Eska, Miska, Mc.Kinley-mountain in Alaska, Kinley for short.

Yogi- for Yogi Bear. Baloo- Jungle book

Neva- means snow.

I personally like Balto or Nanuk.

Doncha love it when someone asks you for name ideas, then goes ahead and picks none of the names suggested?

Welcome, Manny our newest 'little Man', finally napping after quite a big day.

He's been here since around 1:30, still hasn't peed or pood! He's been on about 10 walks now at least. He doesn't 'do' stairs yet, hee hee. He'll be sleeping in our room in the carrier that's missing a door, that he came in. I got a dog carrier that looks like a purse earlier today, I want a real 'companion dog' for our family and hope I can include him in most everything we do. Since he's the only dog here, I don't want him lonely or only get attention when we have the time.

He can walk to school and back, Vince in the a.m. when I'm with them, and Carmen after school when I drive Vince home. He can come to Home Depot and maybe even the grocery store (if I can do that) in his purse-house. I got a bigger plastic carrier for when we go fishing, so he can come but stay in the carrier (so he won't step on any fish hooks). If we go canoing or row boating I'll get him a life vest but it's still winter so I didn't get that yet.

He's very leery of doors, makes sense cause his tail is kinked exactly like it was once shut in a door. He's very observant of sounds, cautious when approached and when approaching us, but once he has contact he melts. Took him about 2 hours, but he hasn't gone in the dog carrier he came in, and wouldn't come out of at Humane Society when I saw him there or when I came to adopt him. I think from his paperwork he was pretty much left in the kitchen away from the family. He has no food issues or anything possessive or territorial like that (so far). I suspect he is a real pistol - I see signs of a maniac on the loose in him already, hee hee. I'm certain he is intentionally avoiding it when we get close to him to avoid being picked up...he lived with a 3 and 4 year old for 4 months, they claim they found him as a stray. He's roughly 8 months old.

He's definitely poodle and wienie dog, his face and eyes are adorable. He has this Holistic food the vet recommended for our other dogs we had, he seemed to think it was really great to eat beef tenderloin, rice and spinach for dinner (scraps).

Vincent is happy, Carmen is over the moon...I surprised them after school, they walked in to see a new dog. Vince was just sweet and happy...uncharacteristically respectful of the dog being leery and gave him space and his pillow. Carmen grabbed her face and cried like a winner in Miss America, she's been glued to the pup all night.

I already bought the giant sized pee and stain remover, why wait, just let the good times roll, hee hee.

Edited: I had to add 2 more pics. Carmen napping with Manny, then reading him bedtime stories. And I need to mention I about got carpel tunnels from doing her hair, lol.

Oh! A poo-dach! Adorable!!! I'm a huge fan of dachshunds!

Just remember everything you've learned from Cesar Milan. Dachshunds can be quite snippy and one-ownerish if not properly socialized and kept under strict control. Calm-assertive is the way to go! And don't forget his neuter!

I can suck the fun outta anything, can't I? :p

Enjoy!

No actually you're not fun-sucking at all...dh and I watched some back to back Cesar last night! I'm in sync with Cesar, totally get him, yet I would have done some things wrong without reflecting on things I've learned from him such as giving affection when the pup was tense or anxious...I would have done that intending to 'comfort' him, but now understand why I shouldn't. I did that wrong with my other dogs. This morning, he's already been on 4 walks. Although his leash 'manners' aren't there yet, what is there that I very much like is he continually references me when walking, it's not like he kind of forgets I'm there like some pups would, he seems to instinctively see me as his leader, and I will keep that up. Same with the kids.

I did notice yesterday that he was fine with the vacuum when I used the hose, but when I moved the vacuum itself I swore he seemed like he will in time, attack it. Before Cesar, I'd have thought that was pretty funny and cute. Now I'm aware of how to prevent that and further behaviors that won't be so funny in time. For now, I put myself between him and the vacuum, he walked away. He made a second approach and partial lunge toward it, so Carmen entertained him right next to it with his favorite chew thing and he wound up ignoring it.

We've had a wee parade of kids coming through. He loves his crate or pillow Vince gave him. When he's there, we can pet him, etc... but I don't let anyone take him off just yet. He hasn't even been here 24 hours yet, plus is getting over his neuter they did before I adopted him. I plan to take him everywhere I can with me, he'll get walked to and from school so be exposed to kids. We'll go to the dog park, but not until he's more bonded to us, and we have this neighbor who's always walking her 3 Yorkies (mom, dad, pup) and I love how well adjusted their 'pack' is so will let Manny play with them. He'll have to be omega I assume since there are 3 of them already established with one another. Our neighbor has a goofie love of a dog, a big lab mix, he can play with her. So yes I have human and doggie social plans for him. At first, it's a bit like work, but I feel comfortable that I know what to do to wind up with a 'balanced' dog.

It was funny, when I walked him, I keep thinking "calm assertive energy" and put my shoulders back and chest out. My brain totally gels with all Cesar's teachings, so that's super helpful to me. However, I'm not sure how Manny wound up sleeping between dh and I this morning, lol. He did sleep through the night next to us (can't risk Vince being alone with him - I trust Vince, but I don't, know what I mean? So he'll sleep in our room.) He whined a time or two, but settled and went to sleep in the (doorless) crate he came in, however, I fenced in an area around the crate in case he had to eliminate because I knew he hadn't gone since we'd gotten him at noon. I have an issue with anyone or thing having to hold it unreasonably, that's torture.

He finally did pee and poo in the kitchen this morning after I walked him LOL, I think I was more relieved than he was that he finally went. Makes sense he went there, as I said yesterday based on his paperwork I think he pretty much lived in the kitchen away from the family. No biggie, I can handle that, he'll be house broken in no time. For now I have no problem with using the bottom pan from a dog cage I have in the garage, putting papers on it, and letting that be 'his spot' to go. Another reason I wanted a smaller dog, smaller poop, hee hee.

This sure is a lot nicer to think about than school issues and so on. I'm really enjoying Manny, Carmen has walked him more than anyone. As soon as he's recovered from his neuter, we can take long walks and rough it up with him throwing toys and so on. I'm going to take him to my vet monday for a check up and rabies shot...they apparently don't do rabies shots at humane society (I didn't know that?).

So far, he's a very humble and easily satisfied dog. He's overly fearful which I think with work and time to become secure with our family will change - notice I didn't say our 'stable' family, lol. He's got tons of great qualities, I can take toys away and he waits to get them back instead of trying to remove them from me, no food issues, not possessive over his crate he came with (and at first wouldn't come out of). Just lots of things that show that if I keep on the right track I won't have dominance issues with him. So, a little work in the beginning, then just maintenance, and we can have a wonderful family dog we can all enjoy and take anywhere comfortably. For now, we're letting him take his time to get to know us and come to us. He has decided his 'place' is on a pillow Vince gave him in the living room against the couch on the floor, so so far there's no need to confine him, he's not running amuck sniffing and peeing everywhere. But I won't be surprised if when his neuter is healed he does, and if so, I can calmly and assertively handle it :D .

Cool--sounds like you're well on your way.

We've gone back to Cesar stuff a lot lately ourselves. We got the new kitten, and she had to find her place in the pack. I have two 30 poundish dogs--one border collie/spaniel and a shar pei/schnauzer. They are both 4 and spayed. Then I have the 3 cats aged 15, 2.5 and 7 mos. The dogs of course wanted to chase the kitten so with lots of "shhhhhhhhts" and interventions, we've broken that nasty habit, the kitten has found her place, and harmony is restored.

Here here.

But Cesar's stuff works cause it applies to the neurology/hardwiring the dogs already have. That's why 'typical' parenting stuff doesn't work with our kids on the spectrum. Know what I mean? Not equating dogs and kids, but equating using the right method for the neurology you're working with, weather child or pup.

That has been all my hoopla about RDI, it works with the neurology, hardwiring of kids on the spectrum just as naturally as Cesar's stuff works with the dogs. Unlike anything else I've tried. You're kids don't have to 'learn' anything to do RDI, they already know how to be autistic. That's the beauty of it for me as his parent, RDI makes sense to HIM. As a bonus, it makes sense to me too :D . Weather for a dog, cat, kid, parent, when you use the hardwiring already there it just works. A parent can come to understand the hardwiring (theory of mind) of another and learn to work in ways that make sense to their child.

Although I can't say how all I just said would apply to a child that is behaving autistic per the DSMIV, but in fact has severe food allergies so is not neurologically autistic, know what I mean? Like if mercury damage causes the hardwiring to change, then yes, I'd say RDI would work. But if mercury damage causes 'behaviors', then I'm not sure if it would. I don't want to give the impression RDI is the only way to go, but if your child is neurologically hardwired 'autistic' (does that make sense?) then yes, RDI needs to be interwoven into everything, just like nt's, so the world will finally make sense.

Woops sorry, back to the pup! Pretty strange I of all people, miss animal lover off topic queen, would bring up autism on a puppy thread, hee hee. I barely bring up autism on autism threads, hee hee.

Here's other piccies...Vince is sick, major head cold. Turns out well actually cause he is low key and chilling, so the pup is enjoying being near him without all the gushy squealy excited sounds Vince would otherwise make. The pup went upstairs for the first time this afternoon. I just sort of left him in the entry way, said "C'mon Manny" and slowly walked up. I didn't respond to his pacing, I then walked past the stairs and boom he decided to come up. He's also been hesitant to cross curbs and over ice, I just get a good pace going and cross with him swiftly and don't allow his mind to fixate on it. He did lots of heeling during our last walk, dunno what caused that but it was cool!

Vince naps??!!!!!!!! Cute picture.

He'd just closed his eyes for a moment, for sure a picture worthy moment with Vince, but no nap, but Manny took several :) . However, Vince has been STILL all day - on a weekend no less when I need it most. It's as though I'm being rewarded for something, lol.

Cally, hee hee, yes Vince and Manny are darn cute - especially when they're tuckered out. So, am I not the only mom that has one of those kids that is always constantly forever on the move so much so that you feel like one day of STILL is like a trip to Tahiti? Just wondering. I haven't felt this type of 'peace' since he got pneumonia about 6 years ago - not that I want him sick, but I sure enjoy the calm. What a difference. Boy, is Manny in for a surprise when Vince is feeling better, hee hee.

I'm not a fan of dog clothes, usually dogs look so unhappy in them. Well, Manny being teeny and with rather thin hair I can see his pink skin through, needs some cover in Wisconsin here. So, I got him a cover up today, omg, he's adorable in it. As I assumed it's a nightmare getting him into it...I struggle while he has a blast chewing, he thinks it's a toy and can't understand why I'm putting his head through it. Anyhow, I'll snap a pic of him next time, it of course matches his blue collar and leash, hee hee. Gotta be stylin!

Allie is almost always hyper(less so when she's asleep, but still moves alot!), except when she's sick- then she's MORE hyper!

Allie is almost always hyper(less so when she's asleep, but still moves alot!), except when she's sick- then she's MORE hyper!
I remember you saying that about her, no fair just when her body needs the rest the most.

Well, I got a pic of Manny Man in his buff sweater that makes him look like he works out, hee hee. He's just going to be full of piss and vinegar once he gets used to us. He did a few laps around the living room today, what a great center of gravity he's got with those short legs...wooooooosh! His body looks less long than it is from this angle, I'd say his body is between regular length and wienie dog length. You can see the kink in his poor little tail in this pic too. His eyes are so brown they look black, with the black nose, he really really looks like a polar bear cub. What a little dickens!

So, that's the full Manny scoop for now. He's only peed 2 times today (in the kitchen, hee hee). I got him some of those wee wee pads, they supposedly have scent to make him pee there. I'll just be relieved when he picks a spot he thinks is ok, and I'll move the 'moutain' to 'Mohamad' (the wee wee pad to his spot) and work it out from there. It's clear to me he has no idea outside is for peeing, even when he sniffs other dogs' pee and poop in the snow. It's like 1 degree out here, I think he's too cold to learn to pee out there and I'm too cold to wait, so it'll be the wee pads for now...brrrrr! Unfortunately too, the snow in back is about a foot higher than he is, so I don't think that's going to work well. At least he sure is considerate to pee in the one room with no carpeting and padding, lol, what a doll!

milivica
01-28-2007, 03:29 PM
I tried to think of what would make me pee outside, if I was a dog, and didn't know outside = pee. So, I tried to eliminate distractions that might make him tense (new fluffy coat and leash and collar), popped him out on our deck after mostly shoveling it off for him, then so he wouldn't hang by the door going ballistic wanting in, I sort of hung out there with him but didn't give him any attention. And in less than a minute wahlah pee and poop - nothing in the house today, everything outside :D . So, hopefully in a few days outside = pee will be how his mind works from now on.

Way to go Manny!

I just saw this post and even if it's too late, I would have called him "Kinky," for the tail. Cheerio.

Yeah, kinky is cute... but she couldn't use that because her husband already named Lisa that. ;>

He is too cute! I can't believe you found him at the pound!
I made him a poem, you can tell it to Vince:

Manny, manny, tail in a noodle,
Your'e a little polar bear
in the body of a poodle.

milivica
01-29-2007, 01:03 AM
Carmen is going to love that poem! She writes a lot, Vince will probably want to make me let you know that Manny's tail isn't really a noodle, lol.

Tootsie, I thought of Kinky, but I couldn't imagine my kids yelling it - especially with some of the Victorian mom squads around here. They'd probably try to perform an exorcism on them during recess.

I totally wanted Cesar, but dh was like 'No way are we calling some other guys name at our own dog". Not sure what his apprehension was about, but we got it worked out. I keep calling him Manny-Man and Manly-Man.

Better go - thank you all for having so much fun with me with this!

Cally...I'll have to ask you more about the wienie dog personality when I get to know him better. He sure does have a darling but husky growl during tug of war for such a wee Man.

He is so cute Mili.

All the more it makes me want a dog.. But sadly the ONLY way we can have a dog is if I can get a service dog for me. We have had so many dogs but have had to get rid of them because we are gone so much because of doctor appts and dont have anyone to watch them. If I had a service dog to help me walk and do things then we could take her with me. Tho with our allergies.. I was told a good full size standard poodle would be best because they are the most hypoallergenic for people with allergies.

My boys want a dog so bad. I'll have to show them pics of Manny. That "coat" is so cute. lol Doesn't look "Manly" enough tho. lol I was thinking more Camoflauge. lol

We get most of our pet supplies at the Dollar Tree. Toys, collars, dishes etc.

I have been calling him Manly Man...there are so many nicknames you can add to Manny, and we've been doing just that.

I love that silly sweater, it's incredibly warm and lined and everything for $20, the rest I got at Humane Society...you can get really really great deals there. He's got 2 carriers (one he was in at his old house and one canvas) for $10. I've gotten many bird, rat, hamster, fish, bird and dog stuff for a minimal donation they ask for.

My last dog that passed was a standard poodle, she was the most loyal and devoted wonderful dog I've ever known, so much so I'd feel guilty sometimes for not being as good a soul as she was. But I'm guessing most dog owners feel that way. This pooch is a very portable size, I have a dog seat in my car for him I'm teaching him to stay in. He will truly be a companion dog. I was hoping if his temperment is right he could play with kids on the spectrum at school, doing some specific tasks to help them feel more competent and bolster their self esteem. I want to make sure I get feedback from our RDI consultant, and want to make sure ALL kids weather verbal or whatnot can participate, plus any kids with any physical disabilities - of course that's quite a ways down the road, and depends on MUCH such as legal liability etc... plus there's the little issue of me having to actually be allowed into school without being arrested...but that's all on the other thread.

Well, for a pup, he already is doing very well not biting/teething hard anymore. I told my kids if he bites, just let out a sharp YELP! so he understands it hurt. He'll realize us humans sure have delicate skin, and not bite hard. Well, smart little guy he is, he's already gnawing on us way way softer. It worked with the 3 dogs I've had and trained in my life, but I DO wonder what Cesar would say.

Ok, I'm just babbling on. Part of me thinks I'm nuts to get a dog again knowing I can't ever let he and Vince alone (just to be on the safe side). Yet, Manny just feels like a natural part of the home, I didn't expect that. I expected he'd feel like somewhat of an intruder, but he just blended right in.

Isabelle

really! Manny has a funny kinky tail, it is sooooooo adorable, lucky you!
Vince has a nice soft face with round cheeks, looking like an angel asleep.
I wish I could get a dog that does not bark at all.....

milivica

Manny's tail was broken in two places, I assume by being shut in a door, poor pup. Probably an accident, but he's still cautious going through doorways, can't blame him!

So far Manny isn't much of a barker, but, he does have lots of trouble at night seeing our reflections in windows - he startles, jumps back off all four feet at once like a kitten, then barks his brains out. Hee hee, poor widdle man. Eventually he'll figure out the translucent beings in the windows do nothing and stop barking.

I have no idea why but the thing that I enjoy constantly, with Manny as well as my dear Dooley (passed a few years ago Thanksgiving) is the clickity click of their tiny toe nails on the kitchen floor. I think cause with little dogs, the clicking is so quick paced as their little legs move quickly.

Well, below, a shot of Manny really settling in. He's King of the Couch, underneath the pictures made to celebrate his arrival.
