View Full Version : Grill Safety for the Gluten Free
OK, here is the first Gluten Free Question for the new/old forum.
If someone cooks something with gluten on a gas grill and then burns of the residue and scrapes it, Is it safe to cook on?

You had to come up with a tough question ;)
I guess the safest thing to do is to cook your stuff on a piece of aluminium foil on the grill. I don't know if that is being over cautious or not - can you be overcautious in this gluten filled world
My DH cooks with charcoal and always burns the grill with a big fire to burn off the old food - but our grille is GF. Do gas grills have a big flame too? Not familiar with them.

Hi Ozz,
I have a gas grill, but it's GF. What type of grill grate do you have? Is it coated with a smooth shiny surface?
If it's like mine (smooth and shiny), I would venture to guess that you take the grate and wash it down very thoroughly, you'd probably be OK.
Was this just a 1 one time thing are are you trying to cook GF after having your Non GF grill for years? If this is the case, I'd get a new grate.
Anne - no the flames gernerally are not that high 1-2 inches - unless grease is causing a flare.

Hi Linda :D
Hi Linda
Who's she???
LOL
Ok here is what happened. My General Manager went out and bought a grill for the company. I discussed how DH and I had to check everything, blah, blah, blah and no wheat....blah, blah
So we get this new grill at work and the next day we are ready to grill and I read the box of hamburgers and the 2nd thing is wheat...no time to fix....so I ask for a little square of the grill for no gluten...but not sure if even that is safe...not sure about the hot dogs...they appeared safe from the ingrediants.
But, one would think if they are porcelian and you burn and wash, they should be safe!??
Oh, and gas grills do get up to 500 degrees so that should help...Maybe! I hope!

Good Grief! Like ya really need wheat in hamburger
Next time try Bubba burgers - they are GF. They are pretty good. I would like to try the jalapeno ones. http://www.bubba-burger.com/

Actually if I had thought, I would have brought the ground rounds in the freezer but I just thought we were going to have hamburgers...didn't think of the boxed variety. Oh well.
I do realize that if you don't live with being GF, it is hard to understand. And the cookout was for the guys working so hard in the factory. They count more than the bosses!

"Hamburgers" sound safe. Ya just never know.
There are people at work who still tell me when there are donuts, cake or cookies in the breakroom. Takes a long time to learn what GF means.

Even then I was NGF, I'd never get hamburger patties with fillers. It's just plain wrong!! ;) heheheee
I guess I'm spoiled having a fantastic meat market only 10 minutes away.
Hamburgers with wheat. Yeesh. I know we were up north once and ran into that, too. You really don't think you need to check on the meat part of hamburgers... unbelievable.
Our grill at home came after our gf induction, and it's gas... so I don't worry about this except when I'm away from home.
Al, are you getting the thunderstorm tonight? Great warm fall breeze with a thunderstorm.... gotta love it :).

Yeah - it's pretty quiet now. It looks like it's on it's way towards you
I did get a pic of a rainbow tonight tho...it didn't turn out very well tho
Nothin' better than a thunder storm. Specially one you don't have to mop up water! I was mopping up last night around midnight or so cuz the wind was driving the rain very hard and causing one of your dinning room windows to leak. I sure hope all the neighbors were asleep, cuz I had the light on and was in boxers doing it! LOL!! I know, I know TMI!!!

This afternoon we had a customer call with lightning damage. It hit a transformer about 50' from their building. They said it was like a car exploding. Was a pretty good light show. Evidently it made the hair on the their arms standup when the bolt struck.
They weren't too happy 2 hrs later when the power was restored and they found out their server is toast! Hmmmm I wonder if I can get away with an extended amount of downtime ;)

We just found our skylights were leaking in the (non) sun room. I think that one window wasn't 100% closed, because when we double checked...even though it seemed tight..the leak seems to have stopped.
If I could only do that room over! But, I do love a good thunderstorm :), so long as nobody is harmed.

It is awsome to watch lightening. My poor pup is terrified by thunder.
