View Full Version : Glyconutrients/salicylates????
Hi there
Just wondering if anyone has heard of, or had any luck with Glyconutrients, or Salicylate free diets for the treatment of ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, or ODD.
At the moment with it all hitting the fan in our teenage son's (and our) life, we are surrounded by well meaning friends/family who have heard about, read about, or know someone who has had success with a number of alternative things.
I must admit to being something of a skeptic, but I would certainly love to hear from anyone on here who has had some luck with any of this stuff.
Cheers
Lyn
I think if you did a google (I did a quick one) you'll find people on boths sides of the fence. Though with what I quickly read I'm more inclined to agree with the salicylate issue because it's probably an allergic reaction, before the glyconutrients, I would have to do a lot more research on the second topic. What I know is this. My son has been helped enormously with the regimen of supplements and vitamins he takes for his ADHD and pyroluria. For whatever reason he doesn't take in enough of these nutrients from his diet or needs more than the average Joe. We are going to have him tested for celiacs just to be on the safe side.
I know that for myself I removed wheat and dairy from my diet and since then a number of physical problems I have had vanished.
Our bodies need so many different vitamins, etc. to function properly and some people may need more than others. Sailors used to die from scurvy and that was from a lack of vitamin C. Unfortunately these days most doctors are quicker to give yo a pill and treat a sympton than to look deeper and see if there is another cause. I am a firm believer in medicine and would never say that nutrition is the only answer, but like most things the pedulum has now swung on the side of medicate for everything. All I am saying is that the food we eat is not as healthy as it used to be and maybe that is causing some of our problems. I deal with hypoglycemia(which also got a bit better when I dropped the wheat and dairy) the general rule of thumb is if it comes in God's package it is ok to eat. There were of course some exception to the rule but basically I don't eat any processed foods.
It's certainly possible that your son is reacting to foods he eats. You could check out the feingold diet as well. Also start to watch and see if there are behavior change after (maybe 20 minutes or so) he eats and see if there is a connection. For me I noticed that everytime I had a sandwich(which was rare) or ice cream or milk I would start to cough and produce muscous.to the point of choking on it. So for me it was pretty clear cut.
I would say that his diet is definitely something worth looking at. Good luck

Hi Lyn,
We have had my son Mikey on the Feingold based regime for the past 3 yrs. Everytime we went to reintroduce something with salysitates.....oh, it was ugly.
We have never been a family eating alot of processed foods, as I wasn't raised that way. I still can my veggies in the summer and what not. SO it was not too hard of a transition for us.
Anyhow. I am a firm believer in the elimination programs. I wouldn't necessarily say diet, as there are restrictions, but there are numerous possiblities that people can have.
Actually, when we first started, my husband was firmly against it, as we had to eliminate everything not accaptable from the house. The mkore he saw the beneftis, the more he accepted it. Even now, sometimes we think OK< MIKEY CAN HAVE .........and then the ugyl head rears again.
I can tell you from watching him and other children what they had eaten within the past hour to 2 hours, just from behaviors. Whiney, irritable, argumentative, rude, nasty, itchy, etc....all are the negative effects that disappear when Mikey follows strictly what he should and should have.
I hope this has helped.

ps, even my husband notices when he eats tomato based products, his ears get hot and red;)
