Has anyone heard of a calcified ring (ring of calcification) surrounding the spinal cord where it enters the skull, associated with AC?
My friend's daughter (daughter is 18) has AC Malformation 1 and has had 2 surgeries. During the 2nd surgery, the dr. discovered this calcified ring. (During the 1st surgery, he didn't open the dura, but during the 2nd surgery he did, and found the ring which was very hard to cut through. He cut through it, and there was lots of bleeding. He clamped the bleeding with clamps that will be permanent.)
I hate to say this, but now, 4 months after the last surgery, she's having symptoms again (headaches, weakness in limbs.) The dr., who is world-renowned in AC, said he'd never encountered this calcified ring before.
She's getting another MRI in a few days. (Shouldn't she have a CT and/or
X-rays too, as the calcification is bone, and bone would show up better in a CT?)
Anyway, sorry if I'm asking dumb questions here; AC is new to me.
But if anyone has heard of this calcified ring or can shed light on any of this, please reply.
Thanks a lot. (The patient is a great kid and I hate to see her go through this.)
