Here's a few links that may help you learn more about service animals.
I've used my doggy, Satin, as my service animal for numerous years.
She helped me during my bout with severe anemia, balance issues and lonliness.
She goes just about anywhere I go....her favorite place is "Stuff Mart" (Costco warehouse stores)
She's been specially trained, but they need not be...but you don't want a dog that's going around chomping on T-bones, ripping up bags of fresh bread, squeezing the Charmen, or "dropping a loaf" in front of the prune tasting table, piddling in the gourmet department, barking at security and biting shoplifters!
You want a dog with manners so not to embarress others who have well behaved Service animals.
We want to make sure we will always be allowed this wonderful priveledge of being able to have a living soul around us serving our needs.
So far the regulations on them are somewhat lax at this time, but each state has different laws.
The FAA supercedes all these laws....so flying with them is pretty strict, especially if traveling to the Hawaiin Islands....takes a 30 day timed Rabies test before you travel. They no longer have those quarantine laws they once had, but this is only for Service and Guide dogs. Other animals is another story over there.
Also need health certificates AND a written statment from you doctor as to why you need a Service Animal....
you just can't say you have one, you need actual proof. So far, the 10 flights we've taken with Satin, they've only glanced at my perscription that my doctor wrote that states:
Patient to use Service Animal to assist with disabilities.
They do NOT charge any fee's to have your dog fly with you, but the animal must be at in your space at your feet just as a peice of luggage would.
I wouldn't suggest taking a slobbering 300 lb St Bernard on a 18 hour flight!
And it helps to train your animal to piddle on command onto one of those pee~pee pads...aka Chucks...(those blue plastic protection pads). (these are great for when you're also not up to taking your animals out)
Satin uses them during long flights in the lavatory.....to be discrete!...she also uses them during the night if she's not able to hold it....she's getting older and its too cold outside for her some days.
Don't have them pinch a loaf for all to smell in the 1st class section...although...I've been tempted to do so! Tee-hee!
I met a woman while I had Satin with me...told her about what she did for me. She told me her husband is very calm around their tiny little doggy. He had a massive stroke that causes him fits of anger. But she noticed how calm he was whenever he had their little dog on his lap. I told her to look up the information about Service Animals.
She called me a few weeks later, very excited to tell me how her doctor thought this was marvelous and how they made their little tiny toy doggie into a Service Animal....she was so proud that she is able to take them both shopping and even out to dinner!
She had no idea this would be a huge solution to her husbands anger fits.
His doctor also learned about these type animals and wrote him a perscription for the Service Animal. They've even flown to visit family with the little dog sitting on his lap during the flights.
Our dog Satin sits at my feet during our flights and when there's room the attendants often have her lay on the seats with the arm rest up....talk about great service! What a life! Wish I'd taken a picture of that...but I do have some photos of her on the flights...I'll post them to share with you.
Satin also volunteered at hospitals and clinics to visit....she loves this immensly.
She loves dressing up and people always laughed anywhere we went....it always produces smiles and happy thoughts!
This takes a certain animal and MUST be trained and registered, insured in order to do this. I'm going to be using one of my cats for this, Bitty-Boo boy. He's been declawed and nuetered....he goes with me often for short car trips. So far he's managed to keep from freaking out less and less with every trip. I want him calm for visits. I also bath him often....he's pretty good about getting bathed....loves the warm water....I tell him its his "Spa Day!" He buys that hook line and sinker! Silly boy! He's got huge feet, 6 toes on each paw. He's such a lap cat....anyone coming into our home often gets a surprise when he jumps up on their laps hoping for some love.
I've posted a lot of his photos on earlier threads....just search them if you want to see more pics of his....can't wait to intro him to some snow! Maybe next week?,,,
Thats if Rags sends it our way! Hey, Buttons2....tell Rags that Bitty-Boo is hoping you'll send down some of that artic blast you'll be getting this week....hope its got some snow with it too!
Blessings....if you have any questions...please PM...I'll be happy to share what little information I have stored in my little brain...but I do know how to Google search! Cheryl
