I suffer from PTSD, have for about three years now. I was originally on Lexapro and Xanax, dropped the Lexapro as soon after the trauma as I could function, still take the occassional Xanax, but very rarely.

Despite articles I have read in the press and here, my PTSD is very clearly linked to a very specific incident, the details of which are still glaringly clear in my mind, 3+ years later. I've never been so shocked, terrified, enraged, scared, and impotent all at the same time.

FOr the first year I mostly did things like pull out my fingernails with tweezers. Yeah, yuck. They are back now.
I am a lot better now, but still can't talk about the incident without crying. I don't know what will happen if I ever have to have dealings with the "object" of my PTSD again - there is a high likelihood of that happening.

Are people ever cured of ptsd? Does it ever become just a painful memory, rather than feeling like a lit cigarette on the skin?
