Stage IV prostate cancer is diagnosed when the cancer has spread to other places around the body. This stage of prostate cancer is difficult to cure, but with effective treatment techniques, it is possible that the patient will live for many years.
Stage IV cancer of the prostate can also be classified into two groups. In one group, the cancer is confined to the pelvic area even though it affects the lymph nodes and other organs in this region. In the other group, the cancer has spread to distant places of the body like bones.
Treatment options on individual patient, a doctor will recommend the best treatment or combination of treatments. Each patient reacts differently to treatment for prostate cancer. This is the final decision of the patient is receiving treatment or perhaps even choose a different treatment. It is highly desirable that the patient receives cancer treatment, in most cases.
Radical prostatectomy: a radical prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate gland throughout the body. This procedure can help eliminate cancer cells that are found in the prostate gland. Usually, this procedure is recommended if the cancer is confined to the pelvic region. This procedure will not eliminate cancer cells that were infected lymph nodes or other organs of the region, such as the bladder.<br />
Radiation Therapy in Combination With Hormone Therapy: In stage IV prostate cancer, the combination of both external beam radiotherapy (RT) and hormone therapy is recommended. Radiation therapy to help destroy cancer cells and is applied by a machine located outside the body. Hormone therapy helps slow the growth of cancer cells. Hormone therapy works better and gives better results when used in combination with other treatment options.
Combined Modality Therapy: This treatment is a combination of different forms of treatment. Chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, to help improve the chances of patient survival relative. Studies have shown that the combination of these treatments have no effect on advanced cancer than using one or a combination of different treatment options. Surgery alone allows only a probability of 20 to 40% of one in five survival rate at one year. The combination of hormone therapy and radiotherapy provides a 55% chance of one in five survival rate at one year. Clinical studies have shown that combined treatment may increase survival relative.
Clinical trials are conducted on an ongoing basis. Through these tests, current treatments have proven effective and ultimately approved for use in the treatment for the public. As new clinical trials are completed, it is possible that more options and discovery that will help a patient with prostate cancer at stage IV survive longer, however, receive annual examinations by a doctor can help diagnose the prostate cancer at earlier stages. It is highly desirable that all men over 30 programs reviewed annually.
