Hi there, I have had a pump since Dec of 2006 after 14 yrs of chronic low back pain and possible RSD in my back. I had RSD in my right leg back in 1985 and had two sympathectomies (nerve surgeries in the back) and I went into remission. Which was a great thing, because they wanted to amputate my leg and I was 21 and said "no way!".
Anyways, back to your question: I was on duragesic patches and oxycontin, and it was no longer holding my pain. Actually about every 18 months or so, I was developing a tolerance, and needed my meds increased, so my doctor asked me if I would be willing to explore the pump, which I did. It took me over a year to get there though.
The pump is considered a "last resort" for dealing with pain. It is a long term commitment to the doctor who implants it too.
If you would like to discuss this further, feel free to contact me privately at not124getul8r@sbcglobal.net anytime and I will do my best to offer help and support.
Best of luck,
Teresa

I've been told this may be my best choice for pain releif as I have multi-facets in health issues causing unrelenting pain.
I keep having to titre up higher and higer for the pain meds to work. Right now I'm just "under the radar" for pain control, but I worry because of my age and no end in sight for solutions for my heallth issues thats causing my pain.
But....I have so much fear having a machine inside me delivering a dose of meds. My biggest fear is having it deliver too much...or go haywire and overdose me where I'd die.
I've watched the DVD's for the pumps...but just can't get over the fear of having it malfunction.
My luck is soooo bad...if anything would happen to someone...it would happen to me.
Is like my life is one big joke...the list of endless run of bad luck is growing longer every day.
This is the ONLY reason I've not gone with the pump...but I hear its so much better, cutting down times spent in the clinic getting refills, running out of pain meds and the cost...etc...so would be my best choice for pain management if I could just get past this fear.
Thanks for your input. cheryl

I just got my pain pump in Dec of 2006, and I would not change a thing. If you would like to contact me offlist, you are more than welcome to. I can help you with getting the proper information you need to make an informed decision. My email is not124getul8r@sbcglobal.net Feel free to contact me, if you would like to.
As far as your fears of the pump giving you too much medication, that is almost impossible as the pump is programmed at the drs office and it is not able to give more than they program in. I am also one of those people who live under "Teresa's law" (who the heck is Murphy anyway???) LOL
Take care,
Teresa
