Help prevent colon cancer

Besides the genetic link, other risks that have been proposed for colon cancer such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, a history of smoking, heavy drinking, overweight, physical inactivity and a diet low in fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber.

Minimize exposure to carcinogens

Do not smoke and avoid people when they smoke are major steps in the right direction. Avoid chemical carcinogens and radiation will also help.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Replacement therapy of estrogen (and estrogen combined with progestin) is suggested to significantly reduce the risk of colon cancer among postmenopausal women. Although this conclusion is still controversial, the researchers suspect that hormones estrogen exerts a protective effect. This has not been proven, and experts do not recommend using it exclusively for the protection of the colon. The suspect's connection is that the hormone reduces the production of bile acids.

Aspirin

If you're at risk of a heart attack, you may already take an aspirin a day. You might be encouraged to note that the plain old aspirin has been shown to prevent some colorectal polyps to form (including in people who already had polyps removed). In addition, it causes regression of adenomas in individuals with small familial adenomatous polyposis. Recent data (from the Nurse's Health Study) have shown that taking four to six regular strength tablets per week for at least 10 years reduced the risk of colon cancer. Apparently, a small adenoma requires 10 or more years to become cancerous if taking aspirin on a regular basis during May using the earliest stage of small colorectal adenoma.

Researchers trying to determine a dosage of aspirin has positive effects on the heart and colon, but minimizes the tendency to cause stomach upset and bleeding. A recommendation for people at increased risk of colorectal cancer is to take one 325 mg. aspirin tablet every two days (this amount is in the range that has been suggested to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease).
