Surgery for colon cancer Facts
Cancer. The??ig? word that everyone dreads hearing. When you hear, we automatically think of lung cancer. The fact is that colon cancer accounts for more than 10% of cancer deaths in the United States. To help understand more about the disease it is necessary to know more about the colon.
In most cases, the colon is mistakenly listed as part of the entire large intestine, but is actually only the largest part of that body. It is about six feet long and moves along the solid waste to the rectum. Along the way, it absorbs water and pollutants from the waste. The longer it takes to move these wastes the best chance to remove these materials.
Colon cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer and has the second highest mortality of all cancers in the world with 655,000 deaths expected this year. In the United States alone, an estimated 106,000 people are newly diagnosed with colon cancer this year and some 56,000 will die from the disease.Statistics dark, May if I can say.
Colon cancer is considered from fungi like polyps that form in the colon, rectum and appendix. These polyps are usually benign (not dangerous), but it can develop into cancer over time. The key is prevention, which is provided mainly by colonoscopy.
A colonoscopy is a simple procedure where a thin wire as the camera is inserted into the anus all the way to the top of the cecum. It is then removed slowly and gives the doctor a complete picture of the colon. It can also remove any polyps must be found.
Sometimes surgery is necessary in extreme cases. During surgery, several things could be done.
? The tumor and the surrounding area was cut and resected colon to fully functional.
? Occasional intrusion cancer in the liver requires the removal of metastases, or places on the liver where the cancer has traveled.
? If a tumor has invaded other vital parts, it may be preferable to bypass rather than remove it.
? In the worst case, a surgeon may be able to do nothing at all because of the spread of cancer. This is called??en and close? surgery. But this is rare.
There are some complications that arise from time to time, including infection, bleeding and intestinal obstruction. Occasionally, the results of heart problems and pneumonia, or embolisms form spontaneously in May.
After colon surgery, the use of radiotherapy or chemotherapy prescribed in May. This could prevent a recurrence of the disease in the surgical areas. Normal full recovery from surgery of the colon is about 4 to 6 weeks. This should allow for healing, both internal and external, and bowel function return to normal.
The quality of life during recovery was slightly attenuated but not completely inhibited. Using the bathroom can be a chore, but it is possible. A doctor can sometimes use a temporary colostomy bag during recovery to prevent injury to surgical areas. When healing is considered almost complete, the patient was weaned back to normal intestinal function and the colostomy is removed.
Symptoms are often not current. However, stool frequency and consistency of bloody stool and bowel obstruction are indicators of early cancer. Advanced cancer will experience symptoms of a point like anemia, weakness of the body and even shortness of breath.<br />
