Green tea may improve your chances of survival of breast cancer?
Breast cancer is one of the most frightening diseases faced today??omen. In fact, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, after skin cancer without melanoma. About 13% of American women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. And it is the second leading cause of cancer death among women after lung cancer.
Scientists continue to study new information to determine the causes of breast cancer and how to prevent and treat this disease. Today, we don??lways know what causes breast cancer, but we understand some of the risk factors.
In addition, we have come a long way in treating breast cancer? While many women still die each year. Some of these studies are very promising, including research on green tea.
A group of people with breast cancer that doctors cause a large area of concern are those with higher expression than the average of epidermal growth factor receptor HER-2/neu. HER-2/neu is a growth factor that sometimes presents itself in a tumor. Overexpression of this growth factor is a concern for patients with breast cancer.
During routine testing of patients who have recently been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, physicians determine the level of HER-2/neu. If the level is high, this information is used to guide treatment. The level of this growth factor is important because studies have shown that patients with an expression more of HER-2/neu have a higher probability of their metastatic cancer, and have an overall lower survival. The HER-2/neu is elevated in approximately 30% of patients with breast cancer.
As part of ongoing research to find effective treatments against breast cancer, scientists have studied seriously the benefits of green tea on both cancer prevention and treatment. Asian cultures have used green tea for its healing properties for centuries, and their overall rate of cancer is much lower than the Western world.
Tea is derived from the plant Camellia sinensis. You?? hear referred to as green tea, white or black. These differences do not result from actual different types of tea leaves, but rather differences in how the tea leaves are processed. The green and white teas are not fermented during processing, but black tea goes through such a transformation.
Tea leaves contain catechins, part of the flavan-3-ol class of flavonoids, which are anti-oxidants. EGCG is one of the catechins contained in tea, and is a powerful antioxidant. Fermented tea leaves converts the catechins to other compounds that are not as healthy as those in the unfermented tea. A study of interest was conducted by the School of Medicine at Boston University. In this study, female mice with breast cancer with HER-2/neu levels were very high were treated with green tea as treatment against cancer regularly. The mice who ate green tea showed slower growth of their tumors and a slower progression of their cancer than those who were treated with the same drug without green tea as an adjunct.
The researchers found these results also think that if green tea can inhibit tumor growth in patients already diagnosed with cancer, it may also be effective in preventing cancer cells from forming and growing in the first place. This coincides with other research that suggests that green tea may be important in cancer prevention. In addition, it helps explain why Asian cultures have such a low incidence of cancer compared to the Western world.
This news is very promising for a group of people with breast cancer who have always had a survival rate lower than others with breast cancer. If we can slow the rate of progression of cancer in those who overexpression of HER-2/neu in approximately the same rate as other patients with breast cancer, we may be more effective in treating these patients.
Much more research is needed in the field of prevention of breast cancer and treatment. In addition, researchers will be able to spend more time discussing the benefits of green tea in cancer prevention and treatment. But it seems clear that green tea has a place in the prevention and treatment of many diseases, including cancer.
Although there is more research to do, there's no downside to adding green tea to your diet to help prevent disease or to improve your health if it does not already exist. Scientists found no risk associated with consumption of green tea. It has no side effects, and is a healthy alternative to coffee because of its high level of anti-oxidants and because it is much lower in caffeine than coffee.
