Hi, Rose. I've sure missed you and all your wonderful advice. How are you? My "D" came back up with the 50,000 units per week for 6 weeks - now we have to see if it stays up on the oral dosage. B12 is slower, but that's another story.
I've missed everyone so much.
This is an awesome forum for all types of Vitamin Deficiencies. It is truly a lifesaver for me!!!!
Take care, Rose,

Hi Rose,
I am new to this forum. You seem to be the resident B12 expert, may I ask you about it?
I have been having fatigue for about 8 or 9 years. The last 6 years, severe fatigue episodes where I cannot even function. I have had lots of diarrhea problems, colitis, and rosacea when it all started. When the severe episodes started, I started having neurological problems as well, episodes of muscle spasms and unable to voluntarily move muscles when not in spasm. Doctors have not found anything wrong. At one point, my neurologist said I was low on one of the B vitamins, I thought he said B12 but I thought he also said folic acid and I thought they were the same thing. Now I'm just confused.
Do you think this could be B12 related? Should I try a supplement, or how do I go about pursuing this? I tried a cheap, generic B-complex when my doc said my B-something was low, but it didn't help.
Thanks for any help you can give me,
Firebird
Firebird,
Have you been specifically tested for celiac disease/gluten sensitivity, and if so, do you know what tests were run and the results?
Cara
P.S. Yes, your symptoms sound very possibly B12 related.

Hi Cara,
Thank you for your interest in my condition.
I have been tested for Celiac/gluten, but I don't know what specific test. The results were negative. I've been on special diets in the past (including going without grains) because I tested positive for food allergies, but didn't see any improvement. I tested positive for over half the foods on the panel, so my second allergist said I don't actually have food allergies, I just have a sensitive body type that tends to test positive....????
What do I do? I just lost my Cobra, so I have en entire brand-new set of doctors who have "inherited" my 8-year problem and 10-inch medical file, and aren't quite sure what to think of me. There is no trust built up yet. I am hesitant to try to call the shots yet. My old doctors were so stumped they tried every idea I came into the office with. I wish I'd seen this B12 information about 4 months ago.
Many thanks,
Firebird

Losing your Cobra ins. isn't the end of the world. Get yourself some B12 Methylcobalamin, mine only costs about $8 for 60 pills. I put it under my tongue first thing in the morning. Folic acid should be a part of your vit regime as it helps the B12 get into your system (correct me if I'm stating that wrong). Folic acid is also cheap.
I saw results within a very short time of using the CORRECT type of B12. B vits are not toxic. Excess is excreted through the urine (urine will be bright yellow).
Read all the info you possibly can.
Great to see you here Rose! Hope Mrs. D is coming over also! I just posted on Emotional Support about B12 & depression, then found B12 on the Food.nutrition site also....sure hope all your info will be retrieved on here!
Happy to be back with the gang!
Take care everyone,Buttons2

I hope you will see benefits with the B12! It was certainly my biggest problem!
I know what you mean about the food allergies...and what to make of it all. We struggle to, as my daughter has trouble with many foods, but I have trouble taking them ALL away from her. We are 100% gluten free, but she had obvious problems with that that did clear (she also tested negative for celiac).
I think when you test positive to everything, it indicates a bigger problem. In any case, if you ever want to explore food allergy type stuff, we are a great self group on the Gluten/Celiac board (most have relocated to the other board). I also have some food allergy links and related subject matter in The Gluten File if you care to peek. Right side bar down to Food Allergy/Leaky Gut page. If not interested, that's O.K :).
I agree that B12 is cheap, so that should help. I just got 100 count for under $8. There are many online stores...
I hope it helps you!

Hello, I'm new here found this site from Roadfood, great site. I was just diagnosed with a B-12 deficiency. I am a 55 year old male with few symptoms of this problem, I think. Anyway the question is what should I ask my doctor before starting this B-12 shot regimine. When I got the letter from MGH I did an immediate coursory search about this and found that if left unchecked it could cause a multitude of problems. Thanks Jim

Thank you again, Cara. I just got my Methyl B12, and I will check out your food allergy pages. Take care,
Firebird
So nice to see every one! I'm so happy the Community Forum is up and working again. I recently eliminated rice from my diet. . .the last grain that I was eating and replaced it with eggs, meat, potatoes and fruits & vegies.
I'm feel'n great! Yea!
I look forward for the community building back up again, as old and new friends make their way here!

Hi Jim~
You are right that left untreated the symptoms can become very severe. You are lucky the problem has been detected before too many problems have occured.
I think it is a good idea to ask your doctor about WHY you might be B12 deficient. There might be an underlying cause, that also needs treating (like celiac disease - anti-tTG, anti-endomysial, antigliadin, total IgA, or H. Pylori infection). They could do antibody tests for perncious anemia (intrinsic factor antibody, parietal cell antibody)
You might also ask about oral B12 in doses of 1000-2000mcg. Most people do just as well or better on a daily oral regimen.
Do you have any GI symptoms?
