as most of you know, having spent months configuring it, i got a new computer last summer. this has XP, microsoft word, and excell. the old computer had 98SE, wordperfect, and quattro pro. i hate word. however.
current problem is that my checkbook was in quattro pro. i have been trying to find something that will read it and either allow me to keep it going or that will save it in a format that something else can read.
while looking for a quattro pro reader i discovered abandonware, which i never heard of before. more specifically, i found this site which is offerring me quattro pro for free. also old versions of just about everything, including CP/M and all the old DOS. wordstar. (matt, are you reading this?)
so my first question here is how safe is this? is this guy planning on downloading something nasty to my machine? is borland going to come and take me away? what is going on here?

Wordstar??? LOL!!
Havent heard of that one in at LEAST 18 years! :D Used to be the only word processor there was. If it got any older it would be written in Basic! (I think it was written in old Fortran, wasn't it? There wasn't even compilers yet.)
Abandonware is just orphan software that nobody cares about anymore. It's been abandoned by the original creators (and everyone ELSE) because it is no longer worth updating, for like the past 20 years or so. Why bother wasting time imbedding malware into it when you and I would be the only two people in the world left alive that even know what DOS is, let alone what these programs are for???
A virus is meant to affect as many people as possible to gain the admiration of other hackers in cyberspace. How can you brag about infecting 2 people??? I wouldn't worry to awful much about any of these programs Annie. It just isn't worth their time.

must have been compiled, don't think there would have been enough memory to interpret it. yes it was a .com file. there must have been compilers, what were they doing on mainframes? was RPG compiled?
FORTRAN was older than BASIC. BASIC was a converted FORTRAN written by some programmer for his ten year old.
i was using WordStar for CP/M. still have a copy of it.
lot of language programs were written on the wordstar platform. pascal, C.

good point. that is why i use that little data base program that no one ever heard of but me. but suppose the program i download already has a virus in it and it is such an old virus that AVG doesn't know about it?
have been looking for lynx, he doesn't have it because apparently it has not yet been abandoned. surely do wish i could find a compiled copy. the help files are seriously annoying, they tell you to ask your system administrator about compiling it. if ZS can't compile it, can't nobody compile it. there is actually a release dated 0ct 2006. uncompiled of course.

thanks dorry
i have excel 2003. i don't know what version i had of quattro pro and there isn't any way currently to find out. i have some files from it but not the program. got that computer in jan 2000, it had 98SE on it. had i believe wordperfect 6. my new word will convert the wordperfect files but neither the word nor the excel will convert the quattro pro.
this website is making me crazy. it keeps telling me all over the place to download and install the converter and i can't find the converter.
certainly would solve my problem if i could.

you could try this free one online:
http://media-convert.com/
it does quatro pro 6 conversions. I don't know if it keeps your file on their server though. Be iffy if it's all your banking info!
I'll keep looking. What's the file extension on your quattro pro file?
or.... download a free trial of word perfect from corel:
Are the file formats the same as in previous versions?
Yes, the file formats for WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Presentations and Paradox have remained unchanged. In fact, the WordPerfect file format has stayed the same since version 6.1, so you can open legacy files quickly and easily.
download trial here (30 days fully functional):

worth a shot. I'd set a restore point in XP to before installing the trial.

Hi annie,
I have a compiled copy of Lynx browser that works with XP dated 6-14-99. I tried it out by coming to the forums with it and it works fine.
I reformatted my laptop last night and found it while going through my zip disks. The zip file is 658kb and has a copy of sendmail bundled in with it. I'll mail it to you right now.
