Many of you know I'm sole caregiver for a stroke survivor. Sharon had a left PCA berry aneurysm rupture on 03/31/04. She's come a very long way - she's speaking NINE-word sentences on a daily basis, is talking more and more every day, is reading more, was able to write her name (printed, block letters, left hand, but still...) about a month ago, has had improvement in her balance and body mechanics, and amazes me every single day with what's coming back!
She fell Thursday night. No big deal, we all trip over our own two feet sometimes. We couldn't get her up after 1-1/2 hours (did I mention we're both very stubborn??? :D), so I called the paramedics. She had numbness in her right leg and foot, but she gets that sometimes when she's upset. In the past, we've thought it was seizure activity - not a seizure, but irritation of the area damaged by the rupture.
Welllll, her foot and ankle continued to be useless, so she couldn't walk. I had to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital yesterday. They did full spine x-rays and discovered that she's got a shattered L1 vertebra. The general opinion is that this did NOT happen Thursday night, because she's not in enough pain. That's what I was asked repeatedly - why wasn't she in a lot of pain, because this apparently hurts a LOT.
Sharon fell a little more than two years ago. She was still in the rehab facility. The rehab doctor only requested hip and pelvis x-rays. They told me she was being a wuss about the whole thing. My God, the pain she must have been in!!!!
So, we'll see what they want to do about it. I want them to repair it (several different options) BEFORE she comes home. If they say they won't because of her medical conditions, I am going to raise holy ****. I'm so angry about this, you have nooooo idea. I'm very grateful they caught it, but she could have become a paraplegic at any point. She's had no back brace, no support of any kind in that region, no nothing. :(
I have to go back to the hospital in a little bit, but I wanted to request prayers, white light, positive energy, whatever you believe in - please send it Sharon's way! I'll update as soon as I know anything more.
Thanks!!!!
