View Full Version : Natural progression of Neuropathy?

Hi all,
About three weeks ago I woke up with both joints at the base of my thumbs hurting pretty bad. In a weeks time the left thumb was fine, my right one however continues to be painful and now you can hear a clicking noise when I bend or extend the thumb and it also seems to lock in place.
My pain doc said Hmmm, beats me, and he gave me prescription ibuprofen, the next day I went to the neuro and he said, Hmm, trigger finger(thumb)you need to wear splints. Neither one seemed too concerned, however, the onset was just as rapid as the appearance of PN in my feet, less painful than the feet though. Of course my mind expects the worse and I get tired of no answers, my first thought was "Oh crud. Rhuematoid!!!" Now I think maybe it's just a natural progression of Pn to my upper limbs, my left hand goes numb all the time and the right one has "trigger finger", another misfire by this poor old body I live in, fifty has been a tiring year. Wish I were a car, then I would be a sought after classic and I could get a complete rebuild and head out on the open road!!!!
One more question, is fatigue a PN thing or is it just another mystery I get to live with?
Thanks, and Happy Holidays to everyone out there:)

The thumb 'click' & 'lock' -does not sound like a 'natural progression' of PN.
The pain at the base of the joint, may- or may not, be a PN symptom.
I get deep bone-bruise type pain in my toe joints, similar to that-
but not a 'click'
I had a 'trigger finger' episode a few years ago, but it was never considered a PN symptom. I thought I had broken a finger during work and had it X-rayed at a local chiroprator's office (a block away & they had the x-ray machine) because I refused to go to an E.R. just to make sure it wasn't a hairline fracture.
Fatigue, heaviness, leaden limbs, tiredness (and, of course-pain)
are definitely symptoms of PN.
That's why I take all my meds and my suppliments.
If I didn't, I'd not be able to get out of bed in the a.m. & go to work.
I'd be bed ridden and unable to walk, or lift my legs & arms.

Clicks, snaps, creaks are all joint, tendon and sometimes verry tight muscle related.
Soo, from what you're saying, and how your doc is treating you, it's sounding a bit like Carpal. Especially about how he wants to try the hand brace. I speak from experience since I'd acquired Carpal in one hand during a deliteful [NOT] experience putting in a screen spline. All the tests, etc. diagnosed, given a few exercises and sent on my way to 'live with it'. Check it out and compare?
I for one do not want to dismiss your problems, it's just that I have BOTH and can tell the diff! PN feels more like you've been dipped in hot french-fry oil, but has some variations. Carpal is more like truly sore, bruised, maybe 'hit with a hammer near a joint' kind of hurt. Neither hurts the less for the 'refinements'!
Hope you have a pain-free minute or two? - Good thoughts - j
My own CREAKS and 'pops' can get verry interesting..Most times, I really don't want to know why? I guess I'd like to leave a bit of mystery in my life!

Dahlek,
Interesting choice of words about french fry oil, I had just told my husband that it felt like my feet were being deep fat fried. I am bumped up to 100mg x 3 and the feet are behaving this week.
The splints for my hands are a split decision, the left that was just going numb is better. The right thumb that is "mis-firing" is getting worse, more locking and pain involved. Not so much that I can't wait for my February Pain dr. appt. I believe that I will ask for a rheumatologist referral then, I feel like every part is starting to break down, and I hate this, I want to feel good again for a long while instead of just an occasional day. Ahh, but what can we do but bear it, wish I could get a reason, a diagnosis for why this all started so suddenly three years ago..........

I can feel your frustration about your health, we all wonder why did this happen to me and where is it going to lead me. This seems to be one of those illnesses that you never get to say its gone you just have to learn to cope the best you can with it. Its sad but true, I know my sister is dealing with some strong pain and she can handle pain well but this is starting to get to her. I feel so sorry for her but don't have any answers except the ones I am able to get here for her, and that better than any doctor she has seen.
So I guess we all have to hang in there the best we can and learn to try and find the best answers that help us through our daily day. Its good to know that we have this forum to vent our frustration and know that there are others out there and they know what we are talking about and can feel our pain and are there for us day and night.
