i have experience neck and shoulder pain for at least 6 years. Recently I started getting severe headaches (not a migraine), and numbness in my ring and pinky fingers. I visited a doctor today who preformed c-spine radiographs and with in 10 mins I was told I had an extra cervical vertebra. I have been referred for an EMG and PT. I have been searching the internet for a few hours, and can not find any information on the topic. I am thinking the doctor I saw today is mistaken, or I did not hear him right. I am pretty sure I do not have the extra rib that I have been coming across, as I figure that would have been discovered on some chest films I recently had taken. Have you heard of this? Is it so common that it is not talked about specifically?

Extra cervical ribs plus the symptoms you describe could be a sign of TOS (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome) and no, the ribs don't necessarily show up on chest xrays as xrays are done at different strengths depending on what docs are concentrating on. I have cervical ribs and they only show up on the xrays that were done to find them. There is a TOS forum here so you might want to have a look in there.
edit: Oh...just see that you are talking about vertebrae not ribs...are you certain the doc didn't mean ribs?

a chest xray doesnt go high enough to catch the "extra" rib......which is actually a hypertrophy of the seventh transverse process......which would certainly fit very nicely with your symptoms....i would get a copy of your records ASAP....good luck and we do have a TOS forum here...
I know this isn't a new post but when I read it, I knew I had to respond. I also have an extra vertrbra. I don't know about the rib part. I also have numbness/tingling in the last two fingers. It is "upper" pain and does not involve the entire finger. I also have pain/muscle stiffness in my neck and shoulders. I have been to PT 2 or 3 times....and it did help.
I had been in pain mangement but tapered myself off of the drugs. I have recently been in a flare and take Vicodin though it doesn't help much with the pain. Additionally, I take a muscle relaxer.
Good luck mahi and please, post again and lt us know how you are doing. Have you sought treatment? Any luck so far?
Phil
Edited to add, you might try posting on Chronic Pain and/or Spinal Disorders. These forums have many more posters than this forum.
