I've been on various meds for ADHD since I was 4, and they took me off them finally at 15. My symptoms weren't bad for the first week or so but they've come back strong again. I heard something about an ADHD diet... does anyone know about this? I don't want to take meds again... i take too many for other things as is!

I have heard about things that may help some people - like getting rid of artificial flavorings and other ingredients that some people are very sensitive to. Therefore, a more natural, organic, whole-foods diet may help. Also, some may need extra nutrition, more omega-3 fatty acids as are found in wild-caught cold-water fish such as salmon. Some may add extra nutrition via supplements since our food sources are not so great any more. Also, some people react to gluten and do better on gluten-free diets.

Also, re-thinking how you view some residual ADHD can be helpful. Kids I know from the "old days" who grew up in healthy environments but had "ADHD" (although it wasn't labeled back then- just severe cases were labeled, but the term was "minimal brain damage") are now (once they got a focus and motivation) successful with their gift of extra energy and ability to multi-task.

Yes - wean yourself off processed foods if you have not already done so. Choose organic, life-giving foods that contribute to good health and give your body the nutrition it needs. Try to prepare wild salmon at least once a week - just squeeze lemon juice and herbs over it (skin side down), wrap in foil or parchment paper and bake at 425 for about half an hour (salmon a great source of Omega 3s). A Calcium/Magnesium supplement is also good for creating a sense of CALMness (CAL = Calcium, M = Magnesium = CALM). Ask your doctor for the Antigliadin IgG Antibody test to see if you are able to handle gluten (gliadin is the protein in wheat). A good diet is EVERYTHING :)

What if your adhd is caused by a brain condition instead of bad diet?
