here is a brief update on me...i know that most here probably wont recognize me cause i really wasnt posting that much on bt before it went down...

i broke my left ankle a couple weeks ago...i got up to get a bottle of water, not realizing that my left foot was asleep and when i stepped down all i heard was a loud crack and then instant pain...my foot turned under and my ankle bone hit the cement floor...i am now in a cast and since my toes are still purple and my doc showed me that when he pressed on them the white indents from his fingers took longer than normal to disappear her wants me to go and have some sort of test where they put blood pressure cuffs on your legs and measure the blood circulation to my foot and toes...

has anyone ever had that test before...i have never heard of it...he told me the name but i forgot what he said it was called...he did tell me that there is only one hospital/doctor out here near me that does the test...i have to go virginia cause no other doc around here does it...

the pain in my ankle and foot is undescribeable...i take dilaudid and vicodin for my back pain but they arent helping with the ankle pain at all...my doc said that i can take some aspirin but even that doesnt seem to be helping...:(

Hey Pinky. So sorry to hear about that. I understand about how other pains are not helped by chronic pain meds. Once upon a time, taking 8 ibuprophens, two asprins, and two extra-strength tylenol would help if I took them all at the same time. Not advisable. A lot of drugs will not allow some of those OTC's. Anyway, even those do not help anymore. Hope your doc has given you something for that pain. Maybe Loritab?

Wildpinky,

Sorry about your ankle. I live in Virginia - do you mind telling me where you're going for this test.
I hope your ankle feels better soon. What do they do for us when we have another injury? I know what we're on wouldn't take care of it? I'm going to be having two teeth pulled soon and need to ask my pm what to take for that, since I'm sure the dentist will not know what to do...
Hugs,
Kathy

thanks Sally and Kathy...i am going to Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Virginia...

i'm not sure about getting different pain mes to help cause my doc told me that he cant give me anything else and to just take some aspirin for the pain...

OMG WildPinky,
When I started reading your thread, I thought I was reading something I wrote! This past June, I was sitting in a recliner and had my legs crossed and fell asleep. The phone rang and I jumped up to answer it and didn't realize my left foot was asleep. My foot folded under and I, too, heard a loud crack! I broke my left foot. The xray showed that the bone actually broke lengthwise. I was lucky that I didn't have any circulation problems but I had to wear a cast until the middle of this September, as the bone didn't want to heal for some reason. Finally, the last xray showed it had healed to the docs satisfaction.
I will say prayers for you that everything will be OK and your pain will lessen. I am so sorry that you are in so much pain. Please keep us posted.
Love,
Linda

Sounds like you had a housefull last night! I bet they kept you entertained to say the least. I hope your daughter and son-in-law find the house of their dreams. It's always exciting when you buy your very first house.

Yes, it's strange we both basically had the same thing happen. I was lucky with mine and hope you end up being lucky too! My doc talked about having to have surgery and pinning it if it didn't heal but it finally did. I hope your's will as well.

Take care and wishing you a pain free day!
Love,
Linda:)

Wildpinky,

I remember you from a while back. I to have not posted for a while. Man, I don't even want to imagine how bad that hurt. I'll just be praying that you heal fast and that the Lord will give you comfort until that time. Prayer is the best healing agent, I have come to find out. I had one foot on death's bed a few months ago while in a coma, but the Lord saw me through it.

Pinky,

Its cause you're doing too much that your foot's giving you problems :P

Seriously though...you've let your doc know about the numbness, right? Are your toes turning colors? Make sure that you are elevating your foot/ankle whenever you are laying down or sitting, to minimize any throbbing that's related to swelling. Rest, rest and more rest...I know easier said than done, what with all the critter's you've got there. Make sure you let Jess do his own laundry when he comes home. Give him a <hug> for me too, next time you see him.

Take care of yourself,

Theresa

Pinky,

So sorry to hear about your injury. I had a broken foot anf know many others online also. The rule is (as Tback said) Elevate!!!
On a couch use the arm rest. If on your back put your leg right up on the back of the couch.
For sleeping I already have a page about it: Pillow Talk (http://oldbenone.home.comcast.net/pillow.htm)

TC

PS: Where's your cute avatar?

hey Theresa and TC...i got my cute avatar back up, TC...;)

i forgot it was on this old computer...my new and faster computer fried...the motherboard fried, so it is in the process of being taken apart and then this old one will be upgraded and updated...

yep, told my doc all about the numb toes and he was the one that noticed that they were black and purple...go back to the doc again on monday and then in november, when Jess is home for the holiday break, i have to go and have that circulation test done...

this just isnt the month for me or Jess...he has so far broken his finger, again, and his tooth cracked in half...half fell out the other half is still in...he is still recovering from the fracture in his wrist...i am trying to get insurance cards from my ex cause i cant afford to pay for the ortho doc and dentist at the same time...now i know i will have lots of strange things happening again but it is so worth it, if it means that Jess can have those insurance cards in his hands...

but ahh got some good news today...someone from WVU nominated him to go to Australia for three weeks in May...they are even giving him a full scholarship to pay the cost...scholar laureate program...

thanks Theresa and TC...and (((((((hugs))))))...

Hey Pinky,

That is awesome news about the Australia thing...a very good friend of mine went to Australia for the fall semester to study abroad...she loved every minute of it and best of all, she didn't have to deal with any winter that year! It would be a wonderful opportunity for him. Please send him my regards.

As to you, missy....you get your tushie in there for that circulation test, ya hear? You need to have the doppler studies done. Is it possible for you to get a ride from one of the local services? I know, I know...big pain in the you know what.

I hear ya about having the insurance cards. He definitely needs to have those, especially while he's away, and even more so when he goes to Australia. And I do hope his arm heals soon. And make sure he's got his finger splinted...I know how bad he was about keeping the splinting on for as long as he needed to when he was playing basketball at home. All I can say is OUCH! about the tooth. I had a root-canal from **** a few years back, and I refuse to go thru that ever again...rip the dang thing out and I'll get an implant...then I don't have to worry about it rotting out of my mouth from these meds!

Anywho, make sure you take care of yourself sweetie. <<<<BIG HUGS>>>> Drop me an email anytime, or IM...all the info is still the same. Luv ya!

T.

Pinky- I don't think we've ever talked. I know we've not talked since the site has been back up but I don't ever recall chatting with you before either. So, HELLO! :D

Anyway, I just wanted to give a shout out to you and for you to know that you're in my thoughts while dealing with the additional pain of the broken ankle. OUCH! Luckily, as many times as I've fallen, I've never had a single broken bone. :P Quite a few strains, I must say, but never anything broken.

Question for you - why will your doctor not prescribe any other medication to handle the new added pain of the broken ankle? Surely he would bump up your medicine to something stronger like higher-strength Dilaudid or Levorphanol, at least while your ankle is so sore considering it's a "fresh"/new break. I'm assuming you use Dilaudid for 24/hr relief and the Vicodin for breakthrough pain; you may want to ask him if instead of prescribing Vicodin if he'll give you Percodan (oxycodone+aspirin --> to help with pain and swelling) until your ankle heals up so that your pain is at least bearable.

Just so you know, Lortab, as someone suggested, is just as powerful as Vicodin (same ingredient - Hydrocodone) so it'd just be like taking the same thing. Just wanted to make sure you knew that! If he doesn't give you anything else, you should keep taking the aspirin (or ibuprofen or naproxen) to help keep the swelling down and that will help minimize your pain level. And as said, KEEP THAT FOOT ELEVATED! ;)

That said, I do hope you have no problems and your ankle heals. I also hope that no problems arise when you go to have the circulation test. I know what test you're talking about because I've had it done as well but, like you, I can't remember the name of it to save my life. I'm so forgetful!

I had to have mine because my feet turn blue a lot and stay really cold as well as my knees. So the test you'll have done will be quite similar to the one I had. It's not bad...just a pressure type cuff around whatever part they're testing to see how much blood-flow is passing through...kind of like a blood-pressure cuff type thing (or at least that is how mine was).

Hope all goes well! Take care. -RH

Pinky,

I haven't been here for awhile but I remember you from before.
I came across your post and it reminded me of what happened to me some years ago in much the same way. I was sitting on my bed and forgot to make sure to let the feeling come back into my foot and leg before I stood up on my leg and I broke my right foot when I set it down on the floor. I always lose the feeling in my feet and legs when I sit with my legs up in a certain position. As I sit now in the recliner, I have lost sensation in both of my feet and legs. WEIRD. And I always have to be very careful when I get up or I risk the possibility of another fracture if I am not careful in how I place my feet. This is probably something that you will have to pay attention to from now on too.:( I have cauda equina syndrome and I figure it must have somethign to do with issues related somehow to that.
I only had to wear a cast for six weeks and it was a walking cast. Fortunately, I didn't experience a lot of pain with my fracture.
Please be very careful in the future.

sorry, i havent been around...i have been at home in pain, lots of pain with my ankle...i went to the doc today and lost 6 pounds in one month...down to 96 pounds again...i was warned tonite that if i lose more, i will be admitted straight from the doc's office as i have no reserve and things will start shutting down, those are my doc's words...as i have an ed but that isnt causing my weight loss, it is because i cant eat...this pain is taking over everything...my whole life...i started taking alleve for the extra pain, to help fight it...but it seems i cant take any more...so now what...i just cant deal with it...it hurts to sleep...it hurts to do anything, even with a cast on...they cut off the cast and my ankle is deformed...my gp is trying to find out what exactly is wrong...he said i mite have some tendons and ligaments torn and need emergency surgery...i am scared...i am very scared rite now...

thanks Abby for the hugs...and thanks Poppetsmom...and Illusion129...and Theresa, sweetie, thank you so very much...i just cant believe this...i am so scared...jess said that he would come home now if i needed him to, but, there is nothing he can do...i am hurting beyond belief with this ankle...i knew something wasnt rite when i heard the very loud crack and the instant pain and no swelling, just a deformity...the doc put the cast on thinking that if he immobilized it, that it would get better instead of getting worse...my doc also told me today that if i cant find a ride to anything, to call him, and he would send someone to take me where i need to go...yes, i have been walking around with the cast on even with the pain but i thought it was just a simple break but today when i saw the deformity, i cried...

now i am used to pain, chronic pain from the ddd in my whole spine but even that is nothing compared to what has been going with me...that pain is so minor compared to this...what the heck happened...sorry, i have to go and as i'm crying and i cant stop...:(

i know i havent been here for awhile but wanted to let you guys know that i will be having surgery during christmas break on my ankle...have to wait until then cause someone has to be home with me when i first come home from the hospital...seems i tore some tendons and ligaments too...and i keep losing weight...down another 3 pounds in 2 weeks...so i have to go back to my gp in two weeks to be weighed again...so this ankle injury is worse than my gp and i thought...my ankle is deformed, they cut the original cast off to take a look at it...the ortho doc said i have to have surgery to correct some of the damage but it mite always be deformed...:(

the ortho doc increased my dilaudid and vicodin...

thanks Theresa, poppetsmom, illusion129, sally, TC, Abby, Boopers, and Headspin...

Oh wow, Pinky! I'm so sorry! I guess I was lucky that I just broke my foot and no torn anything. I wish you the best on your surgery. I also hope that your ankle won't be deformed afterwards. The good thing is that your Ortho Doc increased your meds. That helps a little.
Thank you for updating us. I was wondering how you were doing.
Good Luck to you,
Linda
