View Full Version : Question about warnings, banning, etc.

I have a general question.
If someone is issued a warning, or banned are others notified about it? I tried to ask a moderator this question rather than post it here, but the PM wouldn't go through.

First, check your settings. I found out that with this version of vb, you have a setting to only PM those on your buddy list. Make sure that is UNchecked unless you are very sure you want to keep it checked.
Next, with THIS version of vb, there are *User Infractions & Post Reporting Options*, I don't know how JL has it set up but there are four automatically BUILT into the software at the default level:
Title...Points....Expires.....Warning....Extend
Spammed Advertisements...1....10 Day(s)....Yes....No
Insulted Other Member(s)...1....10 Day(s)....Yes....No
Signature Rule Violation...1....10 Day(s)....Yes....No
Inappropriate Language...1....10 Day(s)....Yes....No
These can be adjusted, new ones can be added, etc but these are the default ones. Liz
In the past we've never been notified about warnings or temporary bannings. Not sure if that's still the rule, though.

Meg, under the settings: *User Infractions & Post Reporting Options* is this option:
Require Infraction Message
This option requires that the user sending an infraction include a PM or Email, depending on your forum settings.
Mine is set to no (by default), but then the ONLY ones I ban are spammers and I don't *care* if they get a message or email anyway. And I mean the really annoying spammers like the ones that show up in your junk email box selling stuff you don't want, trying phishing scams, etc. Liz

I think I can answer this even though I am not a moderator I am aware that they do not discuss people's bannings or warnings with anyone other then the person that got the warning or was banned. It's something that is only discussed with the person involved. It's also not 'appropriate' to discuss the banning/warning of other members on the forum or you can get a warning yourself, if I that remember right. ;)
I wouldn't expect a moderatory reply to this though because it's not something they are going to discuss. At least I don't think they will based on past BT experience. It would just be too controversial to invite discussion on this subject for each and every banning/warning given. :p

If you are getting the message: (fill in the name here) has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her. It's probably because that person has decided for whatever reason to NOT receive PM's from ANYONE. (I THINK admins can override this setting but since everone on my forum has PM listed as a method of contact, I can't be sure).
I wouldn't expect a moderatory reply to this though because it's not something they are going to discuss.
IF they do reply, it will probably be in the same general *this is how vb has it set up for the default* type post that I did. :) Liz
If there's a new system as southernlady has pointed out, it would be helpful for that to be part of the FAQ so that people know what's happening.

From past personal experience (not me that was banned), the Mods can and DO post about someone that has been banned; although we cannot. This is one of the double sided swords people have been talking about. I really hope that the recent allowment of posting about complaints and ideas has opened the eye of the powers that be to what has been going on. I have a feeling it has, we just need to let it play out now.

Yes mmcc53, a very good question, and it is not a problem asking it here...:)
southernlady is correct, this version of vBulletin has some new features. One of them being an integrated system for giving warnings, infractions, and bannings (both temporary & permanent).
Please see the sticky thread I have made that will hopefully answer these questions in detail and give a place for questions & constructive criticism.

David,
Thank you for your link. It was very helpful except one question still remains and now another one has arisen.
Neither you nor the moderators (at least the two I tried) accept emails or pm's. How then would one contact anyone about a problem with a warning, etc.?
Also, I thought that pm's warning people of "bad behavior" were supposed to be private (hence the name PM). Is copying those "PMs" to people other than the one being warned permitted?
I am trying to get answers to these two questions for a reason, but am unable to PM anyone in charge to get an answer to a specific question. How do I do that?
