Did you know it can cause TN. I came across someone who posted this article on Twitter.
Teen's tongue piercing causes ‘suicide disease’ (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15305276/)

Yes, I've actually come across a reference to that in medical literature. Guess one would also have to stop entertaining the notion to have their tongue "forked".
I live in the Bay Area, so I've seen it all. I was in line once at a store, and the guy ahead of me was absentmidedly clicking his tongue thingy against his teeth. I'm usually nice, but I just wanted to smack him upside the head to make him stop.

I heard about that a couple of years ago. I never understood getting your tongue pierced. My son bit the sides off his tongue when he was 18 months old and that took sooo long to heal and he is still has divots in the sides. THAT is what I think of when I hear tongue piercing. owowowowowowowowow.... and the risk of TN???? No thank you!

I have read about this too, I have my lip and nose pierced, not that I wear any jewellery these days. I took them out for a while to see if it would help the TN, and with regards the lightening it did nothing, it may have helped with the ATN, but that coincided with stopping the extra meds and I think that was the main thing that helped really, and I can put them back in with out too much bother so for me I dont think the metal has anything to do with it really.

I have written another post about piercings and muscle response and what a chiropractor advised me to do, the whole long story is here:

It may be of interest to someone. :) Lots of love Gracie x x x

My wife had my lips pierced .... together! Do you suppose? I'm glad she didn't think about my tongue.

I don't think it is the metal in the tongue but that when they pierce it it aggravates the T nerve. I get pain in my tongue sometimes so there is definitely a connection. My daughter has had her nose and upper lip pierced, and currently has an industrial in her ear. She's never had any issues with facial piercings other than healing incredibly quickly if she took them out.

It's just the tongue and it's closeness to the T nerve. ow.

Gene..... I bet you mumble horribly now... was that the idea? :)

What a touchy subject ! my daughter is 17 and has pierced ears, lip, nose, eyebrow and tongue. I begged her, begged her not to do it. It seems to me the more I begged the more she wanted it. She also has two tatoos. She was the most beautiful girl in the world and I keep thinking about what she will do when she gets older and doesn't enjoy her "holes" any more. Heartache. I pray she won't be in pain. ever.

I went back and read your previous thread on piercings. I had no idea that metal would react that way. But when you think about it, it does make sense. I'm so glad my daughter took out all her piercings except the industrial. She has had some facial pain and I am so afraid she is going to TN also. She has chronic migraines like I do and since I am convinced that is why I have TN, the fear is there.

Thanks for the info.

dear Ella;
Before I do it; is there any info on piercing private parts? Wow, that hurts even thinking about it. bob
