I haven't visited here in a while because my RH was a few years ago. Where did all that old info go? Wha' happened?

Hi windrider :)

There was a bad crash of both the hardware and the software. It has taken quite some time to get BrainTalk back online. Mr. Lester felt it was safer for the old database to have us start over.

From what I've been able to gather he will attempt to put the old database into a read only/archive state. Just don't know when.

Hello Windrider: I have just joined this forumn and saw that you also had a bout with Ramsay Hunt. I am at month 9 of a severe case and looking for insights to synkesis (winking eye when chewing or smiling) and difficulty with cognitive abilities with new learning (feels like my brain has been bruised and just does not want to connect the dots quickly, especially when there is noise, light variation, change of elevation, etc) Are you able to share any insights to these problems?

Here's something from my Cache of old postings which may be helpful to you. Unfortunately the database was lost in mid-July, 2006, and is now in the process of being bebuilt. The people mentioned may or may not still be in braintalk.

About my daughter's operation. We will not know for sure if the nerves will grow in properly for several months. We have to keep her from being too active for a while. The doc thinks the operation went well.goodie2, God made you perfect the way you are. We get hung up in outward looks too much but I understand that it is important how we look. There have been others with Moebius syndrome to post in this forum and I feel compassion for those having difficulty dealing with it. My daughter was born with a normal looking smile which she always seem to have on her face. At about age 9 we noticed slight RT side difference and it turned out to be a type of tumor (not cancerous) on her brainstem near the top.We were referred to the Barrows Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ to have it removed and they did. Now we are trying to have other things corrected so that she will have as normal a life as possible. She is very bright and loves to have friends around. This year she starts her first year of high school.

Nerves can heal and grow after years!!
I am recovering from Ramsey Hunt (it's been almost 8 months now) and I'm going to a facial retraining therapist. She's treating a young boy (14) who came to her when he was 12. He was born via forcep delivery and it almost completely severed his facial nerve on one side. Well, after no movement for 12 years, he started feeling movement at the age of 12 -- he's been going to her now for almost 2 years and having steady improvement. So nothing is impossible! (The doctors said he'd never move the affected side of his face -- doctors!!).

I had the threading technique done on April 18, 2005. It was the second and final surgery in my reanimation process. The threading technique gave my face back the contour (cheekbone area) it was lacking after my muscle transfers - I also firmly believe the thread lift improved my speech (by aiding in the lifting of the mouth as well)It is something that I would do again if needed.

I have had Bells for 7 1/2 month and went to see a physical therapist on Monday to see about facial retraining. I have some residuals, particularly my eye trys to shut when I do things with my mouth.I brought the excercises that we have on the web. The therapist had a set of her own. She took me through them, and decided which ones I needed. My question is this. When I do many of the exercises, such as puckering your lips as to kiss, my eye tries to shut. Should I try to force it from shuting or just let it do it's thing when I do the movement. Please advise.
Also, is acupunture just for the pain or can it help with residual problems and synkesis? Please give me your help. This board has been the best thing for me through this ordeal. I hope and pray that everyone is continuing to heal. Thank, Vicky

Hi! You need to see someone trained to do the facial retraining correctly! The whole point of doing them is to retrain the brain to use the rerouted nerves in their new homes. Nothing should be forced, you need to stop the movements BEFORE any of the synkinesis kicks it. For instance, if you are puckering your lips, you need to do so slowly and stop before your eye begins to move AT ALL, the same goes for all of the exercises. If you are not doing them correctly, they will not be affective and you are just wasting your time. Go to www.bellspalsy.ws again and see if they list a treatment center near you. They simply have to be done correctly, I cannot say this enough to you. Just by what you are saying, my guess is that you are not being shown the right way to do them. Jann.

Jann.I checked the training facilities listed and there is nothing here. I live in the Sacramento Ca. area. You are correct. I have not been doing these right. I will do them slowly and stop as my eye shuts.
Would acupunture help me in any way? . I also have a reaccurent pinched nerve in my arm. Would that help me with that problem also? I have never tried accupunture.
When I do any of the excercises using the mutth my eye shuts. Not a good sign I would think. Thanks once again for your continued help. Vicky

Hi, read how to do the exercises carefully on that bells site. They explain them pretty well. Yes, acupuncture would help your pinched nerve and may even still facilitate the healing of your face too. Jann.

When you visit the Bells Inforamtion Site ( www.bellspalsy.ws/forum )site, you can register for the forum section of the site. There you will be able to post questions, etc. You will be able to search for information regarding the vlaue of acupuncture, herbal and other remedies.

That same information can be found here too... this site has been wonderful support for many of us as well and much can be learned from reading past posts if needed. Because this site has been recently re-done it appears to be vague, but in reality it has been in operation for years. The archives contain lots of good info for anyone willing to look through them.
