View Full Version : Help Me Remember this Research?

About a year or so ago (maybe more), someone posted on Braintalk an interesting piece of research that showed that verbally aggressive comments on the internet actually did hurt people as much as verbal aggression in real life. At the time it had a big effect on me, and I have endeavored since to be as cautious about the way I say things as I am in real life.

I was discussing this with someone in real life yesterday and they were stunned. I'd love to be able to show her the resaerch citation. DOes anyone recall this? Can you help me out?

I'd also like to post the research on a hobby bulletin board where some people tend to be a bit careless in how they speak to more vulnerable members.

I'm not familiar with your specifics, but google "cyber bullying."

This is a HUGE problem on the net. You'll discover that many children have killed themselves over perceived hurts on the net. It's really scary to discover how deeply people are affected by people they have never met IRL.

I'm aware of this as I teach high school computer software, and this is so dangerous that it's part of my official curriculum.

Hugs!

I don't recall this either, and I've searched through this forum for it unsuccessfully. Maybe somebody else will come up with it.

I'd be very interested in seeing it.

Thanks for trying guys. I think it might have been on the pre-crash Braintalk.
The articles on cyber bullying were interesting. But, I'm talking more about how rude, sarcastic, mean posts can affect the recipient, as opposed to organized bullying.

I wonder if this could be it? http://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Internet-Patricia-Wallace/dp/0521632943

It was originally published in 1999 so maybe? It looks like interesting reading in any case.

Thanks for the effort Frog, but no, it was a piece of research posted, rather than a book. Thankx for trying tho!

BBS1951, did you try the Archive? You can click on it at the bottom of the page. It goes back to 10/06, but if there's a search function I didn't find it.

If you think that the thread title gave a clue to the material you're looking for, you could look over the listed titles.

There's a lot of research out there on this topic. A lot of the studies are based on adolescents, but there are obvious implications for adults.

I think this is a pretty relevant subject for the forum (thank you BBS!). Discussions get heated because we deem one another as either too soft or too hard on vulnerable members.

I found this article, that may be of interest:
www.ncab.org.au/pdfs/NCAB%20papers/Workshops/Bauman,%20Dr%20Sheri%20-%20Paper%20Cyberbullying.pdf

This is a long article- and this is the only way I could link to it.

I've gone through about a third of the thread titles in archives with no luck so far.

Thanks for the link Kay, but the research I remember ws very specific: They measured the effect of aggressive, rude comments upon the recipient. Drat I wish I had saved it

This is a bit more detailed:

http://www.cyberbullying.us/cyberbullying_emotional_consequences.pdf

It's very difficult to find any kind of research studies on adults.

Here is a link to some statistics:

Hi Patti. Thanks for the very interesting article. Alas, it did not have the research study that I was recalling. Maybe I will stumble across it soon.
