Does anyone know of or have experience with a rifton transtander? It is a supine stander. This is what Tehya's pt wants her to have for new equipment, at this fall's CCS clinic. She is bearing a little weight. She cannot stand straight, she bends at the waist. I really need some input about standers. Do your kids love them? hate them?

I hope everyone is well. I missed all of you.:)

It's not Jake's favorite thing, but he doesn't mind it too bad. He didn't really like it as much when he was little. He got better with it when we got him a mobile stander. He had the rabbit.

I like to go here: http://www.adaptivemall.com/standers.html just to see several options before I agree to a piece of equipment.

Good Luck with the stander search as I will soon be hunting for one too when I move to have one in my place! :)

Micky,
I wish Tehya was ready for a mobile stander. Thanks for the link.
Robin,
Are they uncomfortable?

In the long term I'd say that the discomfort experienced when getting used to a stander (if any) is far less than the potential future discomfort caused by not weight-bearing.

Robin,
Are they uncomfortable?

Jake was a bit older than Tehya when he got his Rabbit. He was I think 5 and had learned to wheel in his chair.

Jake never needed the supine, we always had a vertical. We had an orthokinetics, which I don't even think they sell anymore. :)

Megan has the Standingdani right now and she really likes it.......When she was little she had the tumbleforms tri stander. Megan LOVES her stander now. When she was little she didn't mind it, just didn't love it like she does now....Good luck in your search.

www.standingdani.com
I think that is the site for the Standing Dani stander.....

Robin,
Are they uncomfortable?

Cara, They aren't uncomfortable for me, BUT...I'm 45 yrs old and I've had many, many years to adjust to them! :p At first it may take Tehya some time to adjust to one, its all up to each indivisual. I can only tolerate 1/2 hour to 45 minutes in one before the spasticity in my legs kick in and I have to get down! The "key" is to start off slowly for a few minutes and build her up slowly to see how long she can tolerate to be in one, like I said everyone is different as to what they can handle. Good Luck! :)

Her PT says it is important to be able to put Tehya in it laying down then move her into position. Can we do this with a mobile stander? CCS is probably only going to pay for one of these, I want to get the right one.:)

I've never been in any where you lay down on them first. Years ago I was on something called a "tilt table" where you laid flat on it first and gradually went to a standing position. I hated it, one time my physical therapist put me to straight to quickly and I almost passd out, not good at all!!!

Robin,
One more thing. How do you get in and out of the stander? I obviously don't know much about standers.:o

Well, the stander I have, there's a seat you sit on then there's this padded knee support thing you put against your knees to support you, then there's this stick thing on the side you pump up until the seat goes to a standing position. Let me do a search to find a website so you can see a picture.

Cara, Here is the type of stander I use http://www.easystand.com/photo-album/index.cfm I'm sure when you go to the clinic they will let you know a good one for her to stand in. Good Luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Cara,
Megan's tumbleforms tristander she had when she was little, laid completely flat to put her in it. It was so easy to get her in it that way.
Just a thought, maybe you could ask your PT to let you try a few different standers for a week or so and then you could see what is going to work for Teyha.....I know we have done that with equipment before. . Usually they will let you try it for a week.
It is such a big purchase you want to make sure that you have the one that is "right"....
