Hi all. Ava has been sick since last Monday which began as her being very tired,
fever above
103 and she broke out in a rash on her left side. At first it was thought she
had a virus. The
next couple of dys she had several vomiting episodes. The rash went away but
came back in
a different form/pattern. This went on for a few days. Turned out the rash was
from Lamictal.
Stopped Lamictal abruptly because of SJS risks. Now she is just on LGI and
ativan for seizure
coverage until Epi gets back from the AES thing and she decides what to do.
Anyway, last Thursday Ava began having these rather large and quite pale stools.
Typically
she has trouble going. But now she is not having trouble and her stools are much
larger than
usual and like I said very pale. She is also vomiting again.
Any thoughts on this? Anyone else exp pale stools on Keto, MAD or LGI
Please take Ava to the Doctor or ER today!
Pale stools indicate a problem with possibly the liver or whatever organ dumps bile into the intestines. What is her coloring like? Is she turning yellow or dark beige? Look at her eyes.
The bile has to go somewhere. If it isn't dumped into the intestines, it backs up into the system turning the skin a jaundiced color.
My father-in-law had liver cancer which caused pale stools and his skin / eyes to turn yellow. That was the symptom that sent him to the Doctor.
We also had a cat that went into liver failure when Trevor was 8 weeks old. Her skin / eyes turned yellow.
The vomiting is also a big concern. There is something very serious going on with her digestive tract. What color is the vomit? It is green or yellow indicating that bile is backing up into the stomach?
Please get her to the Doctor now. If the Doctor can't see her, take her to the Emergency Room. I don't want to scare you, but I am concerned she may have something life threatening going on with her since both my FIL and our Cat perished from their liver malfunctions.
Big hugs, now go!

Hi Bec ... no signs of jaundice. I have been looking. I have been wondering about liver stuff too. I sent a note to pedi. If I do not hear back from her w/i the next couple of hours, I will call the office.
The vomit has never had any bile that I know ... I am the queen of vomiting bile so I am familiar w/ it.
The vomit is usually the color of whatever she ate.

Here is a site that has more info than most people want to know about stool color.

liver was my first thought too.
but i think this can also happen from general malabsorption too. but because of the lamictal and rash (lamictal is cleared by the liver), i would keep calling the doc till they call you back.
my understanding is that docs should be very vigilant and have an increased index of suspicion when lamictal causes problems - it just isn't worth ignoring to see if things get better.
oh i hope ava is better soon

I would have it checked too. My son was a 33 week gestation, and we had an incidence when he was about 10 months with WHITE stool. I was very concerned, the ped had no idea what or why it happened. It lasted about 3 bowel movements, then he was fine. (he is typical, on no meds)
Fast forward to now, he is 4, and we just had it happen again. I contacted the ped again, and asked her to do enzyme tests ect on his liver. We did the blood draw last week, but I haven't heard anything yet. I'll let you know what (if anything) they come up with for my son.

Have you gotten those test results yet?
Ava's stools are still pale but getting better. She has no signs of jaundice.
Anyone know if there is anything else I should be looking out for?
In the event it is liver related, would I definately see jaundice or no?

I still haven't heard anything, so I think they may have come back normal. Coltan has no signs of jaundice either. I know that with many liver issues other signs would be broken blood vessels (visable on the skin) in the liver area, itchy skin, edema (water retention causing bloating), possibly colitis. Coltan has shown no other signs, but it is really puzzling.
he does have darkish circles under his eyes, and we randomly checked his blood sugar one day, and it was high (but not in the dangerous end). Not sure if any of this is related. I'll let you know if we find out anything.
