In September of this year, Gucci sustained some kind of injury to her left eye, or so I thought. I immediately got her into my vet who was shocked at what she saw. Gucci's left eye was bulging and it was red and this seemed to have occurred over night. My vet stained her eye to determined if there was an ulcer and there was. She put her on an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory oral drug, along with an anti-inflammatory eye drop. My vet told me her eye was infected and she was extremely worried about her eye because she thought the pressure was so intense that it was going to cost her her sight. My vet indicated it was going to take some time for the eye to heal. She put her on a regimine of drugs for three months and it appeared they were working. The swelling went down, the redness went away, but the brown color of her eye never really returned.
Important note that I forgot to mention -- she was diagnosed with uveitis in the left eye.
Gucci's been on the regimine of drugs until last week. Yesterday, I came home from work and noticed her left eye was starting to swell up again and become red. It also has white film over it. Gucci's right eye is starting to swell and become red too. I'm beginning to wonder if whatever was going on with the left was really an injury or is there something else going on, especially since it now seems to have affected the right eye too. I immediately contacted my vet and will be taking her in on Thursday, maybe sooner if either eye gets worse.
What on earth could be happening to cause her eyes to turn red and swell like they are going to pop out of their eye socket? I'm really worried and pray it's not something that will take her life. I can't lose her.

I agree with your thinking,an injury wouldn't be affecting the OTHER eye & since this happened as soon as the meds were stopped.....this has got to be something more than originally considered. That's quite awhile to be on meds too. I wish I could help, my only thought would be to seek out another vet which might give you a different diagnosis.
Also, I realize you are most likely @ work right now but if it were me I wouldn't wait until Thursday for improvement. Something that comes right back soon as meds are stopped & now has progressed to the other eye....just doesn't sound good.
Really hope that Gucci will soon be just fine!
Hugs to your precious sweetie & hopefully you will have good news very soon!

Thanks for the well wishes.
My vet has referred me to a veterinary ophthalmologist because Gucci does well while on the meds, but it returns once she's off the meds. And it has spread to her other eye.
The uveitis may cost Gucci her eyesight, and worse yet, she may have to have one of her eyes surgically removed. I don't understand how she contracted this terrible disease.
Please keep my Gucci in your prayers.

Hi just did a quick google on canine uveitis, you might want to do some research. I had already wondered if perhaps Lyme disease was the problem,I didn't bother reading any of the sites.....however did see that it's caused by a spirochete & Lyme is mentioned in a site about halfway down.
Please have your doggie tested for Lyme & the co-infections. This would explain why Gucci improved (assuming dog was on anti-biotics!). Gucci might lose more than eyesight if it is Lyme & not treated properly!
Don't panic, dogs are much more likely to be cured from Lyme than people!
Good luck!! Hope this helps.....Buttons

turns out Gucci does not have Uveitis . . . but she does have a condition called Infiltrative Stromal Keratitis in both of her eyes. The good news is it can be treated, but the bad news is that she'll probably be on medication therapy the rest of her life. The specialist is treating her very aggressively with two types of eye drops and she said she would guarantee Gucci's red eyes will be 100% improved by Christmas. The specialist said she's only seen this two times, with Gucci being the second case. She also said Gucci's condition is far worse than the other dog she treated. She took pictures of Gucci's eyes to do a comparison of "before and after."
This disease affects the cornea portion of the eye and it causes the eyes to swell and turn red. Even the brown portion of her eyes is red and pink.
She doesn't have Lyme disease, which is a good thing. I am so grateful this can be treated and it's not anything horrible that will take her life.
Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. Gucci's giving four paws up and many doggie smooches for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a happy, healthy and safe New Year!

Just when I think I have things under control with Gucci, another problem surfaces. Last night, Gucci was laying on her back wanting a belly rub, I discovered a new problem. This is a really sensitive problem and I'll be calling my vet first thing this morning.
She has a something pink protruding from her tinkle area (vagina). I don't have the first clue what this is. It's just sticking out and it looks painful, don't know that it is painful, it just looks like it is.
I have two fur babies, one is Gucci and the other is Tiffany. They are litter mates, born the same day and are as different as night and day. Gucci weighs in at 15 lbs and Tiffany is a whopping 7 lbs, soaking wet. When I was looking at the two of them, I fell in love with Tiffany because she was so tiny. Of course, I couldn't just have one, so I took Gucci too. I always thought Tiffany would be the problem child becaues of her size. Turns out, I was wrong.
Gucci has had more problems than one can shake a stick at. Both of them just turned nine years old on December 20th. Gosh, I hope this new problem isn't anything serious. I've been up since 3 AM, searching the web to see if I could find anything on this delicate subject. Can't find anything. I wish it were 8 AM already so I could call my vet.
Looks like another worisome weekend is in store. Again, please keep Gucci in your thoughts and prayers.

After being on all the antibiotics? Just a thought...or if she's not fixed, maybe she's coming into heat?
Yeast infection? All kinds of goodies come into mind...nothing serious tho.
Sounds like you've competent and caring vets on hand. I always have found that vets are far more candid than people docs when it comes to letting you know if its a 'little', 'medium' or 'big' problem[s]. As for the eye problems, is your creature wearing one of those collars to keep her from rubbing/scratching? That, even for a few days, could keep it from getting worse.
Warning about the collars tho...it's hearbreaking to watch them bump, thump, stumble around. But, it's far better than alternatives, such as surgery and more vet bills.
Please give us all updates! Hugs - j
