Dan, I keep thinking 'only about 100 years ago my grandma was born (now it has been 103 yrs)' -- 1903. That was the year the Wright brothers invented the airplane. She was born BEFORE the airplane. They didn't fly till December, thats why they went down to Kitty Hawk - it's too windy in Ohio in Dec. Think about it, U.S.A. is really quite young. Just a few generations ago, many of our relatives came over from Europe.

To think that a couple of yrs later after the plane was invented
an invention to help man kind it was use as a weapon...
That didn't go as it was plan i suppose!
Wonder what else was different?

He was 'rich' enough to own a plane, like a few hundred other people - that's all! They were canvas and stick jobs, and the prop was hand carved. At that time, people were so horrified that so many were dying. They called it the war to end all war, because so many people couldn't believe, Damien, like you, that inventions were being used to mow down people.

But there were so many people who hoped it really would end all war, that they offered their lives to help stop it. My grandfather was shot down by a German over the Atlantic ocean far from land. By a miracle, he managed to land right beside his prop, and even more miraculously, survived for more than an hour hugging it.

But the best thing of all was that a passing Portugese freighter happened upon him and hauled him up. He passed out as soon as they had his body out of the water and on the way up, but not before he said - BRING UP MY PROP, which is now above our couch.

That is so interesting gizmogirl. Thanks for sharing it with us. Myself I think that may have been the best generation of men ever. No, not really but there were many who served that could have avoided it because they were so YOUNG. By chance, is your grandfather still alive? If so please tell him someone thinks he is still very special for all he did. Was he also married at the time? If so Grandmother made plenty of sacrifices as well.

glad you thought he was cool too, joy - he's passed on but had a long and happy marriage that spanned more than one world war. Let's hope we get as lucky as he was that day, and soon!
