yesterday we had warning of high winds & alot of rain. Well I got busy & moved all my plants under cover & then was inside making my bean soup & forgot about the wind coming.
Went outside a few hours later & the new umbrella had spun right in half! the top was upside down on the patio.....wish I'd been watching when this happened cause it must have been a weird sight!
I'm now thinking we either figure out a way to keep it from spinning or we build another layer on the block wall, seems it's just the exact height now for the wind to go over directly into the screw on part of the umbrella.....
Hard to believe I was outside enjoying warm sun just a couple days ago.

Pati, My Patio Umbrella landed over the fence after jumping over the deck and out of the cast iron umbrella. I have come to the conclusion that if the wind is blowing, the umbrella is down. This has happened twice now, so I am not buyinf an umbrella again. The deck is on the back of the house facing East, so the sun is blocked and the deck is shaded.
What I really need is a large retractable umbrella in the front of the house as it gets so incredibly hot out front!
Hugs to all, I will catch up at the end of the week!

Your umbrella reminds me of Mary Poppins. We've had strong winds and then everyones things blow into our yard. We have found kids toys and planter pots.
That would have been funny watching the umbrella spin around.
that would have been a sight to see. it'd scare me a bit tho.
it gets so windy here that the rocking chair, big one at that, gets turned over. i have had a rattan table with several big pots of flowers to get spilled. the wind seems to come under the porch part and fly thru the breezeway and take anything in it's path out, lol.
we have a good view of the south west from our picture window
my mother got me in the habit of hanging those roll up rattan type things to block out the sun. we have it so hot here that all my plans for a new house (back before we lost all the money) had it so that there was not much coming thru the west or east windows. the ast some windows but with coverings if needed.
but all our houses out on the farm with that hot ole west sun shining in sure made me think oh no, not if i can help it next time, lol.
i am always looking at end of season sales for the very long ones so i can keep one or 2 on hand just for that reason. then roll em up , up & down but oh so nice for blocking out the heat.

I have had to chase a few umbrellas down. I try to remember to go out and let them down and secure them with their velcro ties.

Yeah, I wish I'd seen it happen cause it must have been fast! This is a new umbrella, sent HM off to buy it soon as I saw the sale ad. Then he had a fit cause I made him go back & buy the stand which cost almost as much as the umbrella......I can't reach the little thingy that lets it go up/down....thus I'm putting all the blame onto HM for allowing this to happen!
Winds on the west deck here are just horrific at times. I planted arbovitae's (sp) years ago to help block the wind......dumb idea since they also block the view!the patio chairs always end up in the shrubs,I have to settle for planting the barrells with stuff that won't fly off. My latest brainstorm is plexiglass panels but doubt that will happen anytime soon.
It's so windy here, I wouldn't dream of getting an umbrella. My bro & I went to my dad's house earlier & chained down his porch furniture. We get continuous high winds Nov thru March. Oct & April get several non windy days. (that &%@ wind is what makes it seem like -10* when it's 35*)
I've mentioned before that the Wright Brothers grew up a little south west of here and since they tried their plane in Dec., they went to Kitty Hawk, N. Carolina to do so.
