I have been having weird things happen with my mouth. It has become extremely dry. My tounge has become rough and dry and looks like it is chapped, the papillia are turning white. This morning there was a bump on the inside of my cheek that looked like it was filled with blood. Here I am at work about 4 hours later and it is gone. it just dissapeared just like that! What the hell is going on, is this related to my leak?? Does anyone have anything similar to this. Please help it is so weird.

Could you have thrush?
Here's a WebMD overview: Thrush (Candida) Symptoms (http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/tc/thrush-topic-overview)
My husband got thrush after IV antibiotics, symptoms sound similar to what you describe.

Thrush or not, if it continues to be bothersome or gets worse, can you get hold of your GP?
hi as above the blood blister was probably where you bit the inside of your mouth and its just poped you could go to the chemist or drug store and see what they have or your gp
mouth wash type solutions may help stress can also alter salivation

That thrush thing is gross! haha. I dont think thats what it is mine is not the bad and the white stuff is only on the back and it is like a part of my tounge it doesn't come off when I brush it almost like the skin is just really dry. The top of my mouth feels really rough and dry too. I went to the dentist about a month ago and asked them, they said they had no clue what it was! They said it wasn't candida, that it could be related to dry mouth but they didnt think that was it either. My tounge just feels so different. I am using dry mouth gel and mouth rinse but nothing gets rid of it. My neck is really tight and my MRI showed engorgement of nerves with blood and my neck is ridiculously stiff. I wonder if maybe I am not getting proper blood flow to my mouth. I am thinking of going back to the dentist and getting it cultured. The stress thing is probably most likely, as we all know having a constant HA is not exactly a walk in the park. I will try and get a picture of it and put it up here. Thanks for the replies!

Hi -Although somewhat different than what you describe, I figured I'd share:
When my son's leak was at its worst and he had several autonomic issues (tachycardia, swallowing difficulty, ...) he also would say that when chewing food his mouth was really dry (not enough saliva). The autonomic nervous system controls salivation, so I assumed his dry mouth was related to his leak. He only complained of this while eating.

Thrush (candida) doesn't always have to be as pronounced as these photos show (this seems to be a pretty severe case with the white plaques all the way at the front, sides, and under the tongue, thus probably why it was chosen for photos to demonstrate thrush clearly). The white you describe at the back of your tongue that doesn't come off when you brush is classic of thrush (in a doctors office, they will often use a tongue depressor to try and scrape off the white and if it doesn't, they will highly suspect thrush and thus treat you for it). Thrush generally doesn't go away on it's own without being treated with an antifungal and you can keep reinfecting yourself if you don't change out toothbrushes etc. after you get it cleared. I kept getting thrush over and over again while leaking (mostly this past fall following my 5th blood patch and then fibrin glue treatment leading up to surgery) and think it was due to both antibiotics and also just an overall run down immune system from stress/illness due to leak and procedures. Having your doc try either a nystatin oral rinse & spit or swallow solution or an oral antifungal pill (Diflucan for example) isn't that big of a deal and would consider asking to try this since the dry mouth gels/rinses haven't seemed to make a difference.

Mot,
I really don't think anyone is trying to make mountains out of molehills, or trying to take the place of professional medical care. I think everyone did reinforce Roosters plan to see his doctor. I know for me personally there are times it just feels good to talk to others in similar situations and throw around ideas. Who knows, once in a while we may hit on something that many of us experience and haven't talked about yet. I thought that was one of the main advantages of coming to this forum. I would hate to see anyone become discouraged from doing just what Rooster and the folks who responded did. We're suppossed to all be here for each other, right?
Take care,
Lisa

I decided to address this in its own post.

Thanks guys for the responses. I forgot to mention that i Have a bottle of nystatin, I rinsed with it for about 8 days but no real improvement so I stopped. Should I try it again for longer. I am def gonna go back to my dentist. If the culture it will it confirm thrush? The dentist said candida(which is the same as thrush right?) would come off when I brushed it. I'm confused.
