I have been on Xanax 0.5 mg for about a year now. How strong of a dose is that? I only take one tab in the morning and one tab in he late evening. How long would it take me to get off of this amount if I wanted to?

I too was prescribed the same but I only took the one in the evening on a regular basis the one in the morning was making me too tired so I only took that when I was seriously needing it. They also make .25 so you could titrate down to that dose say in the a.m. then in both a.m. and p.m. then just take whichever dose you think you need the most. Maybe keep the p.m. dose if you think it may interfere with your sleep. You could try maybe a week before each titration down. I am by no means a doctor though. Everybody handles meds differently. I am highly med sensitive so I would have to do a very slow titration down. Always talk to your doctor so that you can be monitored during titration. I definitely do NOT recommend just doing without all of your physicians knowing.

hey don!:)
xanax (NOT the ER version; extended release), comes in .25, .5, 1, and 2mg. strengths.
xanax is considered a fast-acting, high potency benzodiazepine. people who have been on this drug for as little as 8 weeks, have had side effects from withdrawal.
length of withdrawal symptoms vary with age, length of use and amount used.
whatever you do, DO NOT attempt withdrawal by yourself.
there is more info here on this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanax (just click on that).
talk to your doctor.
take care of yourself,
jeannie

Hi Don,
I have been taking .25mg xanax 3x daily and .50 at bed time. I have been on this regimen for at least 14years.
Everything Jeannie wrote is right on! Don't try withdrawal without a doc's help. There have been incidences of death due to fast withdrawal.
I have considered trying to go off xanax and another benzo, but I have to admit I am afraid of the withdrawal.
I wish they used to put people in the hospital for drug holidays, the last one I know of was in the very early '80's.

I can't remember if I had told you all about haveing marital issues. Anyhow, right before Christmas, we were haveing issues, and instaed of takeing one xanax in the morning and one in the evening, I was so distraught and crying and stuff, the last week in the month I took the extra one each day, and then of course I ran out a week or so before time to get my refill. About the second or third day, noit haveing any, I started to feel really bad. I started to get nauseated, I started to have muscel spasms, and I would get into a tub of hot water trying to feel better, which did not work. About the fourth or fith day I was really getting to feel awful. That night I could not sleep all night long. I started shakeing, and my arms started to flail about. I got awful diarreha, my nose started to run, and I was in one hell of a shape. I knew what was happenning but was hopeing it would finally pass. Finnally after going through hell all night, the next morning my wife called a doctor friend she knew and told him I was withdrawing off of xanax. He told her to get me to the hospital immediately. By the time I got there I was just jerking all over. I just wanted sooooo bad to go to sleep. At the ER they got me calmed back down and gave me enough medication to last until my refill came back up. I tell you, I don't EVER want to go through that again. Iam still on the xanax. I will NEVER let myself get into that fix again. I will never take more than Iam suppoised to take and be without. I truly thought I was going to die that night. I thought since I also took methadone that it would prevent me from withdrawing on the xanax. It DIDN'T. i WILL TELL YOU WHAT REALLY SCARES ME THOUGH NOW. yOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MAY HAPPEN IN THIS OLE WORLD OF OURS. What is some tragedy or event happened like katrina or an earthquake or anything like that which could take away the ability to obtain a certain medication you are on? If something happened bad enough, there may not be a paharmacy to go get anything. For those of us who are on all these medications, what would happen to us? I know what would happen. We would just finally go into withdrawal and nothing could be done to stop it. MAKE A PERSON THINK DOESN'T IT?

don!
i am SO SORRY for posting that incorrect link to xanax information. here is the right one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanax
here is a detailed explanation on how to post a pic in braintalk. go slowly and it should work :)
Posting a Picture on Braintalk
in the box underneath the last post is the message box. it says, "Post Quick Reply" and "Go Advanced" in boxes underneath it.
click on the "Go Advanced" box.
that will take you to another message box. type in the title of your post. there is a box titled "Message" under that. on the top line of that box, there is a smiley face , a black triangle pointing down, a paper clip and a black triangle pointing down.
click on the paper clip.
when you click on the paper clip, a box titled "Manage Attachments" will appear. right on top, in that box, you will see 2 "Browse" boxes.
click on the top "Browse".
that will take you to another box called "Choose File" or something like that. if you have your picture in a file titled "Images" thats what you should click on. if not, find the place where your picture is located.
click on your picture when you find it.
the name of your picture should appear in a box called "File Name". your picture must be in jpeg. format or it might be too big to fit within the limits of files allowed on braintalk. on the far right side of this box are 2 boxes, one is "Open" one is "Cancel".
click on the "Open" box.
when you click on the "Open" box, your file folder will disappear and your file name will appear to the left of the box named "Browse" in the "Manage Attachments" box. to the right of the 2 "Browse" boxes is a box titled "Upload".
click on "Upload".
your file name should then appear underneath "Current Attachments".
close this "Manage Attachments" box.
now you are back to the box where you are posting your text and want your picture posted. next to the paper clip icon is a black triangle pointing down.
click on that little arrow pointing down.
when you click on the arrow pointing down your file name should appear in a little box under "Manage Attachments".
click on your file name.
have your cursor where you want your picture to appear. when you click on the name of your file it will appear in the box you are posting as something like this:
[ATTACH]1799[ATTACH]
you can click on "Preview Post" and you will see your text and where your picture is. then you can just click on "submit" underneath the preview box.
kathy, don't be afraid of getting off benzo's if you really want to. the doc can put you on some longer acting benzo's while you are getting off the xanax, then you get off off the longer acting benzo's easier after.

I have been given .25 mg in the past. I was instructed to take as needed, not on a regular dosage schedule. I found often that just knowing I had the option to take it was often enough to get me through a crisis without it. On a side note, I have found it to be the only thing that helps me fall asleep fast- I have chronic insomnia. I take about 4 hrs to react to any medications that are supposed to help me sleep. But .5mg xanax, and I'm out like a light and don't wake up feeling all drugged out.
Since I never took it on a regular basis, I never experienced withdrawl, but my doc treated the .25 mg like she was giving me a mega dose, and basically caused me more anxiety, making me afraid to take it unless I really felt I needed it.
