Hi everybody! What? Everybody isn't here?

OK - OK I know there was a "new" forum created when this one crashed (Braintalk2), and I do know that everybody wasn't sure if BT would ever be back. There was no explanation - not even a "we might be back," or anything. But who knows what all John Lester (Administrator) went through to get us back online.

I know John personally, and although he hasn't kept in touch as much as I would like for the past year or so, I am still greatly indebted to him for these forums. I know he sunk a load of his own money in software, etc. - not to mention all the time he spent building the world's most visited neurological forums. And he may have had other issues with his personal life (yes, I am sure he has one!).

These forums and chatrooms saved me - literally preserved me from self-destruction nearly 7 years ago. I will probably post in Braintalk 2 also, but this is my home. I do hope that the others will see their way back if even occasionally.

Now, I thought it would be neat to start a weekly "find" thread. Hopefully, it will turn out to be a daily find by somebody about any topic or event. It should be something interesting (or just plain funny).

This one will be for this week (which ends Sunday, Oct. 8).

My find is in the next reply (for ease of reading). Enjoy! And it's good to be home again! (and I didn't even click my red shoes, Dorothy! lol)

I figure if pot can help with memory in Alzheimer's, it may help with Parkinson's memory deficiencies, also!
Peg

From CNN online Oct. 5, 2006
WASHINGTON, (Reuters) -- Good news for aging hippies: Smoking pot may stave off Alzheimer's disease.

New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana's active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.

THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer's patients, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

The researchers said their discovery could lead to more effective drug treatment for Alzheimer's, the leading cause of dementia among the elderly.

Marijuana is used to relieve glaucoma and can help reduce side effects from cancer and AIDS treatment.

Ditto Peg..."These forums and chatrooms saved me" I have been frequeting Braintalk 2.

The weekly "find" idea is a good one.

BrainTalk was the first place I visited in 1998.
It is odd to have two forums with similar names.

I have thought that using Marijuana may be good for medical conditions. I wonder if this is something that must be used on a regular basis or just when needed. Is it only effective for people who have been smoking for years. Maybe its a little late in the game to start now. I smoked it way back in my hippie days. I suppose if nothing else it might be fun to get high again. These days I'll try anything to feel better on a bad day. Any input from some of you "Hippies" from way back.
