View Full Version : Scam?? Or just a wrong number?

I got a call today from someone (whose number didn't come up on caller ID, of course  ) who talked at a million miles an hour, something about being from such-and-such pharmacy, regarding my "anxiety medication." I don't take anxiety med!!

She did say the correct first name, so I wonder if it's a scam, but I s'pose it could have been a wrong number call. I had to get her attention and tell her I wasn't on anxiety med. Then she asked if I was taking any med (for anything). I wasn't about to tell her anything about that. My med costs less than a candy bar.

What would you do?

That sounds like a scam to me-especially since the number didn't come
up on caller ID. You would think that a pharmacy's name and phone#
would come up-why would they want to block it? Did she just hang up,
or did she apologize, first? If she apologized, it "could" have been a
wrong number, but if she just hung up, she was probably trying to
scam you. Another thing: it's none of her business if you take any
medication!

If you get a call like that again, and they ask for "Liz", just say, "Liz who?"
Meaning, get them to tell you the last name of the person they say that
they're calling for. They may have the right first name, but the wrong
last name. If they give you the wrong last name, just tell them they
have the wrong number and hang up. If they give you a hard time,
or if they keep calling you, report it to the police.

Good luck!:)

I erno...but I have noticed many telemarketers, just plain telemarketers, asking for my parents or myself as (first name) (last name) like they know them, so we talk to them and we can't figure who they are and then they tell us, oh yes, we want to sell you something! Very tricky. Beware, not everyone on the phone who calls you by your full name really knows you :(

Thanks, everybody! :)

You have confirmed what I thought, essentially. I actually used to be in telemarketing  :o, and I'm always on my guard when I get a call from someone who acts like they know me but I don't recognize their voice, especially when the number is blocked. :o  It just occurred to me that it could have been an honest mistake. In any case, once I got her to listen to me tell her that I wasn't taking anything she could help me with, she was quite apologetic, and we hung up. On to bug the next customer, most likely.

Lizard, I know it is likely a 'comunications technition' when they call in the day & ask for my dh or ask for him when he's out of town. If I don't recognise the voice I know it's not a business call cuz they would call him at work in day or cell if out of town. If for me, they ask for "Mrs. ___" & pronouce it wrong. I wrote that communications tech cuz I too was once a telemarketer & for fun we said we oughta be called that (lol). If I do ever start to listen to one & am not interested & they won't stop, instead of hanging up, I tell them "call the next person, they might be interest & you can make a sale.

I'll always ask "who's calling?" before I say anything. When it's a telemarketer, I'll just say I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to talk, and just hang up. Having caller id is helpful, and if I keep getting calls from the same #, I'll tell them to take me off the list. If it's an unknown #, I refuse to even answer.

I've got my home and cell #'s on the DO NOT CALL list. If they continue to call from the same #, after I asked to be taken off the list, I'll often complain on the website. I've noticed when I've done that, that the # is often not just for one place, but a shared line.
