View Full Version : Medicines that "grow" on you

Years ago, I took Neurontin for epilepsy-it didn't control my seizures, but
I gained 80 (!) pounds. When I finally got off of the medicine, I lost
the weight-thank goodness.

When I first developed asthma back in '92, my inhalers didn't always do
the job and I'd have to go to the hospital in the middle of the night (it
was always the middle of the night!) for a nebulizer treatment. Well,
a side effect of the treatment was that it made me very hungry. By
the time we left the hospital, I was ready to hit McDonald's for a
bacon, egg & cheese biscuit.

My asthma has gotten to the point where I have the nebulizer machine
at home-it saves trips to the hospital in the middle of the night!

My "rescue inhalers" haven't been doing their job for a long time, so I
was recently switched to Advair and the change is remarkable! I haven't
even touched the nebulizer since I started on the Advair! I've been
using Advair since the 19th of this month and it's working great!

That's the good news. The bad news is that I think the Advair is having
the same effect as the nebulizer: I used it last night before I went to
bed, and before I could go to sleep, I had 2 slices of pizza. That was at
11:00PM. This morning, I woke up at 4:50 and my stomach wasn't just
growling-it was roaring! So far, I've had another slice of pizza, a
pack of Tastykakes and I'm considering going back out to the kitchen
for some chocolate chip cookies-the bakery kind that are about the
same size as a small pancake. This isn't impulsive eating-my
stomach is still "complaining" (loudly!) as I'm typing this.

I have trouble walking/exercising because of problems with my spine and
my legs. If it weren't for that and the cold weather, I'd try to take a few
walks around the block a couple of times a day.

LIZARD: I'm probably going to end up joining WW at some point, but
right now I can't afford it-too many other medical bills. :(

Thanks for letting me rant.

Hey, Hon'. :(

I'm sorry to hear all of this. Are you really gaining quickly, or are The Parentals just giving you a hard time?

If you wanna E me with some foods you typically eat, I can get you started on the prog. :)

The last time I got on a scale, it was 177. That was a couple of weeks
ago. I've been avoiding the scales since then. But, I probably don't need
to get on the scale, because I have my own "Weight Watchers"-my parents.
Especially my father ("Are you eating again?!")

You'll be getting some mail from me soon.:(

Thanks, Liz!:)

Okay...From now on, your response is:

"Yes, Dad. I'm eating again because I have to take my medication with food. If you'd rather I didn't, I can always puke all over you, 'cause that's what happens if I try to take it without food." Simple enough? :)

ME :)

P.S. 177 at your height is only overweight by maybe 10-15 lbs at the most. :)

Funny-to hear my parents talk, I'm morbidly obese!

I looked up some of the meds that I am on or have been on recently, and I was amazed at how many of them can cause weight gain. I have gained about 60 lbs over the past 4 years and can't seem to lose it. Plus, my disorder makes it so I can't do strenuous exercise. I am going to PT and we are working on gradually increasing the amount of exertion I can safely do, but it is nowhere near enough to lose weight right now.

I took Neurontin for about a year and a half, and I'm sure that contributed to the weight gain.

I have taken Seroquel for sleep/mood off and on over the past couple of years and weight gain is a well-known side effect of that drug, too.

I was on 40mgs/day of prednisone for about a month and a half last fall, and I gained almost 25 lbs while taking it

I took Celexa from 2002 to 2004, and that can cause weight gain. Now I take Effexor instead, which is supposed to not be as bad as some of the other antidepressants for weight gain.

I sort of knew that all of those drugs (neurontin, seroquel, prednisone, antidepressants) can cause weight gain. I was surprised to find out that my antihistamines, which I take everyday for severe allergies and chronic idiopathic urticaria, can also cause weight gain. Also, there were some sites that said that Prilosec can possibly cause weight gain. I had no idea about that one!

The meds I am currently on are:
MS Contin
Oxycodone
Ibuprofen
Effexor XR
Seroquel
Restoril
Tetracycline
Prilosec
Allegra
Iron
Miralax

Has anyone heard of any of the other meds on this list causing weight gain?

I don't want to use this information as an excuse, but since I feel SOOOO guilty about gaining all of this weight and so helpless about not being able to do much about losing it, it does help to know that it wasn't all my fault that I gained all of this weight.

I'm not sure about the side effects of the medicines-I'd have to look them
up somewhere-but I can tell you that meds cause weight gain in different
ways: the Neurontin slowed my metabolism so I wasn't burning calories
as fast. The nebulizer medication made me "feel hungry".
