View Full Version : More Lhermitte's weirdness

I just can't get over the weirdness of the different manifestations of the Lhermitte's. Sorry to post on this topic again, but it's so WEIRD.

After my walk yesterday, I got vibrating Lhermitte's in a spot on the bottom of my right foot. The weird thing was how it changed depending on the position of my head.

I'd lower my head partway and get a single "burst" of vibrating on the bottom of the foot.

I'd lower my head a little more and get repeated, discrete "bursts" of the vibrating that just kept on coming.

I'd lower my head all the way and it would settle into a steady though somewhat weaker vibration.

Supposedly the stretching of the nerves as you bend your head down is what causes the signal to be improperly transmitted... this change as I lower my head further seems to illustrate that.

Anyone else had VIBRATING Lhermitte's?

(I also have the "electric buzz" variety and the "tense/pulling" variety in various places and times.)

Nancy~

I've had this symptom since I had my first spinal. When I drop my chin down towards my chest, I have this strange sensation - like a vibration that runs down my spine. I asked my doctor about it years ago (like back in 1996) and was told not to worry about it. Easy for them to say I guess. I have noticed that over the years it's lessened over the years.

Hope you get the answers you're looking for.

Hi Nancy:

I learned something from your post. I always thought L'hermitte's was just an "electric shock" feeling.

It can cause a vibratingsensation, or a tense/pulling one too?

Does it cause you pain? Where do you feel the tense/pulling sensation?

Interesting.

Kari--yes it's easy for them to say; if it's not painful, it's not a problem, but it's a constant reminder that something is awry in our nervous system! :)

Cricket--the shock down the spine is the classic definition of Lhermitte's that you see on Web sites, which is why I didn't originally realize that the weird tingling/buzzing sensation I got in a strange place (too embarrassing to mention) when I bent my head down was actually my first "version" of Lhermitte's.

I thought Lhermitte's was only a shock down the spine, which I have never had. Never had any Lhermitte's above the waist in my six years' history with it.

When I told the neurologist in 2000 about the weird tingly spot when bending my head down, he said "that's MS."

Since then I've had all the sensations I mentioned--mostly the electric buzz and the "pulling," but now also sometimes vibrating or a sensation in the back of my leg or my left thumb and forefinger that they are "about to vibrate."

Strange sensations but very distinct and repeatable. The Lhermitte's is actually very amusing for me.

On this board I have seen lots of people post about different weird sensations in different parts of their body (not involving their spine) when they bend their head down, move their head sideways, etc.

Reading one of those threads in the week following that world-turned-upside-down neurologist visit is what convinced me that the neuro was right (as I'd walked out of his office believing he didn't know what he was talking about when he kept saying "MS" to me).
