Hello everyone, my name is An0n. I am 14 years of age. I live in the south-eastern part of the United States. I came to BrainTalk hoping to find an answer to my mental disorder...

Well, it all started about 3 years ago. My mother had caught a bad case of West Nile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Nile_virus) around 3 years ago. My step-dad was in jail at that time for domestic abuse towards my mother, so me and my older brother who was 17 at the time had to take care of our mother. I missed out from school for over 2 months and failed a grade trying to keep my mother healthy. The West Nile gave her brain damage so she has short-term memory loss and a bit of long-term. Anyways, this is about me and not her. It was probably about a week after she got diagnosed with West Nile that I started having these voice hallucinations. At first, they would just call my name, but as the days went on they started talking to me. After about a month or so I started having visual hallucinations. The first one that I can remember seeing is when I was in my room at night, about to sleep. I heard a voice behind me, so I turned to look to see who it was. I noticed that the stranger, who seemed to be dressed in a black trenchcoat, had a knife and was pointing it at me. After about 10 seconds the stranger disappeared, but not forever. I had that same hallucination almost every night for about 2 weeks! Of course, me being only 11 at the time, I was frightened by it every time. As I began to grow older the visual and audio hallucinations started to stop, until now.

I began hearing voices about 2 weeks ago, the voices sounded the exact same and were calling my name. Last week I started having hallucinations in daytime. This is very hard for me since I am currently in High School. The most recent hallucination was when I was at school, the bell had just rang. I walked out of the class-room and went to the bathroom to urinate. As I entered the bathroom, I looked in the mirror trying to fix my bed-head hair. When I looked into the mirror, I noticed a very young girl, probably around 7 years of age walking through the doorway with a doll.

The hallucinations are ranging from happy, pleasant to evil, dark. I remember one night, around 21:00 I went to the bathroom. As I entered the bathroom I caught a glimpse in my right eye. I looked over and... well... I saw a very bloody mess, gross, and gorey. It seemed that someone had been hung from my shower head?! Of course this freaked me out and made me scared !@#$-less.

The hallucinations usually last anywhere from 5 seconds to a minute.

Is there any disease or mental disorder that can be related to this? I get around 8 hours of sleep every night, and recently I haven't been stressed at all. I haven't told my parents or relatives about these hallucinations because I'm scared they will think I'm crazy and start sending me to a therapist and doctors.

This is real, so I expect real answers please, I just want to be normal again. I can't handle seeing this stuff.

Thanks everyone.

anon,

real answer:

we are not doctors here. we cannot offer you a diagnosis.

hallucinations are not normal.

many things can cause them.

unless you tell your parents and go see a doctor, you will not find out what is causing them.

i urge you to do this as soon as possible, before something serious happens.

An0n, If you felt tingling or pain in your arm, you would go to the doctor, right? Or trouble swallowing because your throat was so raw? Then why in the world would you not have already gone to a doctor about symptoms affecting your brain function????

My younger daughter had audio, visual, tactile, etc. hallucinations. She felt weird pains in her body. She had a lot of other weird symptoms. Some were caused by a sleep disorder. Narcolepsy can cause that. Some may have been caused by a caused by a functional vitamin deficiency caused by a genetic glitch. She also had intestinal malabsorption. She needed to have her diet changed, and she needed supplements. She also had hormonal issues that were a major contributing factor to some of her audio hallucinations. She needed hormones. In other words, she needed DOCTORS and lots of testing.

There are over a hundred different illnesses that can cause psychiatric symptoms. This here has links to a bunch of information, including one section where there are lists of illnesses that can cause psychiatric symptoms. http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2008/03/important-links-to-help-our-children.html

Finally, if they can't figure out what the cause is, they give some catch-all mental diagnosis like schizophrenia or psychosis-nos, which sure means they really don't know the actually medical problem, but at least they may be able to give some medication to suppress the symptoms.

Please make sure you see a doctor.
