SafeLink has just started offering free cell phones in my area to those in need and of low income. Online application is very easy. We just received ours in the mail. rollover minutes though you are limited in free minutes. you can buy tracfone minutes.

We got one because I have missed over 4 sick calls from my boy's schools and the others on the list were either at work or unavailable. Only people getting this number are doctors and the schools.

Go to the website and type in your zipcode to see if it is in your area.

Just an update on the SafeLink. I got my phone and it works great. I just made sure that the only people that have the number are immediate family and the schools. The school being the main reason for getting it and I have already had 4 calls on it from them. I was on the road and shortcake vomited once, spilled lunch on clothes, had an earache, and had a fever once. I am so grateful for this program. Now if I can get my dagnab 16 yr old to forget the number, I tell him he better be bleeding when he calls and he calls wanting to know when I am coming home he is bored and hungry. O M G!!!!

60 minutes a month is more than enough for emergency calls and any necessary calls we make from the car. We always have some rollover minutes. I am truly grateful. I can go out and not worry about rushing home to check the answering maching.

I love my safelink phone, it's really a huge relief to be able to go out and feel safe. :)

New Jersey now has the Safelink program.

I was wondering if the phones come with a charger and/or phone case/cover?

I tried calling Safelink's # but everything was "recorded." Found no way to talk w/a real person. Pressing "0" didn't work either. Kept bringing me back to the main menu.

Hey Pookie it comes with a plug in charger for home but no case and no car charger. I just bought a multi charger car charger and my son had a case he wasn't using so I confiscated it.

Thank you!!!!

Phone charger is really good news. I believe I have a car charger somewhere around the house or in my car glove compartment. Once I receive my phone, will check to see if it works.
As for a case, I just saw a few (hard & leather) at my local dollar store. :D

Can't wait until I receive the phone. It will come in handy for those emergencies that I hope I will not ever need. I do not plan to give the number out as I will be placing calls rather than receiving them. Those will go to my land line cordless answering machine phone.

With the roll over minutes, mine will probably add up to 1440 minutes (24 hours) by the end of the year. :D

Thank you again.

No problem Pookie. Yeah I got mine after I missed like 4 calls from my little guy's school. I was so relieved to get it and of course like two days after I got it they called me lol. I never run out of minutes but it is because I don't get calls in during the summer. I call out only if I need to.

I saw an advertisement on tv last night for a government sponsored cell phone but it is not Safelink. I will keep an eye out and see who it is and post next time.

I hope this program doesn't get sliced, it's so important to us to have these phones, I wouldn't be able to afford a tracphone on my own even, I know they are cheap and all but it's just too hard...I saw some cases at the dollar store too, but mine fits perfectly in the side pocket of my purse so I haven't ever gotten one of those cases. Might if they go on sale though, I'm a sucker for a mark down on mark down sale. :)

Well, I received my phone last week. Setting it up was a breeze. Oh wait, I had problems trying to retrieve a voicemail message that my mother sent to test it out. I couldn't find it. :D I think I used up about 10 minutes trying to find the darn voicemail.
This is my first cell phone. Never owned one before.

Today I received a promotion email for Safelink customers for 120 additional minutes "instantly." The offer ends 9/2/09. My phone serial # was listed on the promotion also.
Called "technical support" to confirm if these minutes were actually FREE as I couldn't find anything in the email about "payment."
Spoke w/a TS rep name Phillip who confirmed that I would not have to pay. The additional 120 minutes are FREE for Safelink customers. However, he also stated not to add the minutes until the beginning of the month.

Anybody else get the 120 minutes promotion?

Yes I did too but I read it as 'add 60 minutes and we'll give you 120 minutes instead of just 60.' So you have to purchase the first 60 and the second 60 are free. THis is also my first cell phone too, wasn't too diffcult to set up, but I tell you what, I have no desire for one of those 'smart phones' this does all I need it to and I love it! Glad you got yours Pookie! Don't forget to leave it ON the 1st so it picks up the signal they send ou t to give you your alloted minutes! :D

That is the same way it sounded to me. Buy the first and get the rest free. They sent that promotion to me for about the first two months.

Congratulations Pookie, welcome to the technical age lol. I am still learning about my cell, thank goodness my 17 yr old son knows about them lol.

Well, I am NOT purchasing any air time. I will just continue to receive the monthly rollover FREE air time. I'll have over 120 minutes next month. :D

Today I set up the phone book. I saved everyone on "Phone" since I have no idea what SIM is. I knew I wanted the numbers saved to a "phone." LOL I started to call my 10 year old grandson who lives in Atlanta to help me. Instead I surfed the net & found a manual. If anyone has:
Motorola W175g
http://www.tracfone.com/Common/Both/Digital_Assets/UCMTST_007392~2.gif

Direct download manual - PDF file: Motorola W175g Manual (http://www.tracfone.com/Common/English/Digital_Assets/UCMTST_007848~1.pdf)

I thought since this "babyboomer" knew her way around a computer pretty good, customizing a cell phone would be a breeze. WRONG!
Why does a Panda bear show up as a "wallpaper" when I selected "Smilie."
So tomorrow, reading the manual will be my weekend project.
