When you use the Remove Programs option in the control panel to uninstall a program, how much of it does it remove? All? Some?

This thought came up because I've been reading the NAV 2007 thread with some interest (my year of upgrades is just up on my NAV 2006 and it's time to renew it or get something new).

Any time you uninstall an "installed" program, it leaves some orphans behind. Usually just some temporary files needed to extract other files during the install, sometimes a possible shared file, nothing important. These are just the larger programs that NEED to be installed though. There are lots of small stand-alone programs that run without an install.

You can run a general disc clean-up by clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop, right click on the C: drive and choose properties, hit the general tab, and next to the colorful pie chart, hit disc clean up. This will remove some of those orphans for you.

If in doubt about shared .dlls, leave them. Programs use them for info to run. They can usually be removed but if you are in doubt, leave em alone.

There are freeware programs available to REALLY clean a computer out of unneeded crap. I don't have any right now but can search for some,,,,,
