Hi everyone,

My husband was admitted last Sunday to the ICU with pancreatitis and has gone through the DT's while in the hospital. This past week has been an emotional and physical roller coaster (pure hell). He has been detoxing from alcohol as well as nicotine (chewing tobacco) and he has been either on pain meds or ativan the whole week. This has been the hardest thing I have ever gone through. They have had to post a security guard in his room because he becomes so agitated that the nurses cant handle him. I am slowly seeing a change but the nights are still absolutely awful, he just wants to come home and will not remain in bed.

I am not sure at this point what to expect when he comes home. He cannot drink again because he will literally die from it if he does. I dont know how to help him. I realize he needs to help himself, but I will also do whatever it takes to help alomg the way. Does anyone have any suggestions?

thank you!

First question: does he want to quit drinking or is he just having a fit to come home? Does he want to die or does he want a better life? Is he willing to go to AA? His attitude will tell alot about what the future holds. He has to face reality.

Can he go into treatment from the hospital? One week being supervised & he's being so difficult he needs 24hr security tells ya something right?

He's gotta change,or there's absolutely nothing you can do but helplessly watch him kill himself. I know that sounds harsh but it's a fact.

I also know how difficult this is for YOU. Find an Alanon group in your area & go to meetings ASAP. You need help every bit as much as he does.

I'm speaking from experience. Please feel free to PM me anytime. (((((hugs for healing now))))
