Hi all,

I recieved the results of my bone density scan today-- my bone density is too low, and I am at risk for fractures. As most of you know, I use a chair about 75% of the time. In addition, I eat right, exercise, am no where near menopause, and have been taking calcium since I was a teen. Immobility from CP is most likely the cause, but I'll find out more when I visit the endocrinologist next month.

I just wanted to put this out there. I had to bring up a density scan to my doc, and explain to her that immobility put me at risk. I'm glad that I at least know now.

So great, I walk funny and am at risk for falls (not new news :D). But now I'm at risk for breaking a hip? Yikes!

I have broken two fingers due to falls and they weren't major falls, just little falls. I have been active most of my life except for the past 2 years due to alignment problems. This makes me wonder if I also have low bone density even though I'm only 17.

Sorry to hear the news, but like you said, always good to know. Did they suggest any specific weight bearing exercises or activities for you? One of the things I do is to strap on small weights to my legs and use the elliptical. (They also suggested jumping rope, but that's not going to be happening in this lifetime! :p)

That is a bummer, Nic. Like you posted, though, at least you know now, plus you are young - hopefully that will help the situation.

My interest has been high on the subject lately, as well - my mom is in her 40s and has has noted bone loss and my sister (who is also 27) needs to have a bone scan as well because she has been doing Depo shots for birth control for a few years and one risk of that is bone loss. One of my cousins is only 22 and has lost a lot bone because she was doing Depo shots and neither she or her doctor was aware that staying on Depo so long would cause that.

It was amazing to me what I learned just doing some simple research online about it. Anyone who is intersted should get the facts - one risk is simply having as small frame and being thin. If need be, be like Nicki and bring it to your doctors attention.
