I'm 21 years old, and in the last 1 and half years, I have been suffering from memory loss, then this year I’m getting bad headaches and tingling in my arms and legs, they always fell so heavy and twitchy and I keep tripping and dropping things. My grades at university have dropped I’ve gone from an A+ student to failing in simple maths, I’m always lost for words and this morning I lost my sense of smell. I know you are all going to say see a doctor, which I did this week, he was quite and said to have a MRI which I’ll have next month, could any one help me prepare in what I might hear or have to do, I’m getting a little freaked out.

And should I phone my doctor and tell him I’ve lost my sense of smell? Or wait till I get the results?

((((((Pixie)))))) <<-- those are hugs!!

Welcome to BrainTalk. I'm sorry for the fear that brings you here.

First of all: 'Yes', give your doctor a call and let him/her know about the loss of smell.

None of us here are really capable of diagnosing someone that we've never met. That said, some of your symptoms sound like MS (multiple sclerosis). I'm suggesting that you start by posting in that forum: Click here for the Multiple Sclerosis forum (http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=195).

There's a lot of really nice people there that understand the fear and the uncertainty that surround a diagnosis of MS. If that does turn out to be 'your diagnosis', there are a lot of things that can be done to make your life easier. And being surrounded and supported by people who really understand is a huge part of being able to cope.

Pixie, one of the things that will really help you now is to make sure that you're taking GOOD care of yourself: eat well, sleep well, and rejoice in the life that you have http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/moose53/MINIS/HUGS/brightertomorrows.gif. Our mindset can go a long way in helping us cope with all the 'stuff' that life throws in front of us.

Take this time to hang around here and let us know about you. Let us know about what's bothering you and let us know how we can help.

Internet communities like this are really interesting -- they provide us with the kind of support that we used to have before the world changed so much and we moved out of the embrace of our families and our friends and neighbors. Even though you're in a sort of 'limbo-state" right now (a place that way-too-many of us have passed through), you have a lot to offer the other people here that are like you -- a 'newbie' with a lot of fears and uncertainty about what's going on. If you reach out to help those who are in the same place that you are, that support will come back to you many times over.

Pixie, I'm glad that you found your way here http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/11/11_2_104.gif, but, sorry that you HAVE TO be here.

BIG HUGS.

Welcome, Pixie! :)

I echo Barb's caring wisdom. :) I also want to let you know that Arnold-Chiari Malformation is a known mimicker of MS, so it should be looked for very carefully on your MRI, as even a tiny herniation can result in debilitating symptoms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold-Chiari_malformation. Here's a good list of symptoms for you: http://www.chiarione.org/symptoms.html.

*hug and good luck!!
