View Full Version : Prescription insurance sucks!

So I refilled Jimmie's zonegran, and it cost $90. We paid $48 last month. So I called our prescription provider. They said that the drug cost was $156 last month and went up to $169 this month...so I am like...okay it goes up by about $10 and we pay like twice the co-pay? Then she tells me that it is because it is a maintainance drug and that the co-pay after the first 3 refills goes up to $90 to $150. Ridiculous. So she says that we can get it mail order and get 3 months for $90. Personally mail order makes me really nervous because he needs his medication, and I am scared of his running out and the meds not having been delivered. But I don't know that we have a choice. $90 a month is just prohibitive! I hate insurance.

Melvin (My significant other) gets alot of his meds mail order and my mom gets all hers that way, so far she and he have never had any problems. Oh, come to think of it, Dad gets his that way, too, no problems so far...

Lacy... My husband gets MANY meds by mail order, including some that have to be refrigerated...and he has never had a problem. You are allowed to order the refill up to two weeks before you 'need' them, the paperwork will tell you exactly when you can order. You can usually do it online, or send it back with a check...but usually we do it online and they bill us. We have never had a problem yet. If they doctor orders an increase in meds, you just send in the new script to them and they will automatically send more. I think you'll like it once you get used to it, it will save you LOTS of money in the long run...

We do mail order the time for my husband. We haven't had any problem at all. It saves us so much money. We also do mail order for my sons adderall and it is very smooth. We just have to sign for it.

We too do the mail order and it's much less stressful having 3 months worth in the medicine cabinet than 4 weeks. When we fill Maddy's meds (Tegretol XR & Lamictal) via Walgreen's or our local grocery pharmacy, they are ALWAYS out of Tegretol and give us a few to get through till their order comes in - every time, no fail. Going to mail order has been wonderful for us. :)

Do you get 3 months on the Adderall? My son takes Adderall XR and we've been doing THAT month to month, and it's really expensive too! He's almost 19, but will be on it for the foreseeable future, and we'd love to be able to do it for a 90 supply! (Even if they send it every 30 days... as long as we got it for one price!)

We are able to get a 3 month supply on the Adderall. It really surprised me that they would dispense it like that but they do. You have to be home to receive the meds because you have to sign for them and they come 2 day express via UPS. By doing it mail order we save quite a bit of money.

Carly's growth hormone is mail order (no choice). It works pretty well most of the time. My problem is that they say they will call to ask to set up a delivery and then they don't call.
You do have to keep better track of dates when scripts expire. It's not like having a neighborhood pharmacist who will let you know and then you can get the order filled pretty quickly.
DH should used mail order for his eye drops. It could save us $100 a year.

On our plan I have to pay like for name brand $20. for 21 day supply (they wont do 30) at pharmacy OR I can pay $20. for 3 MONTH supply if I do their mail order!
I also get the boys Vyvanse (med for ADHD) in 3 month supply by mail order.
So now mostly the only time I use pharmacy is for short term Rx's like antibiotics or trial meds like if I have a free coupon.
I get emails telling me its time to refill a prescription.
As the ole saying goes.. Try it, you'll like it.. Well I think you will ;)

Maybe this has nothing to do with what your talking about but I want to share this and it really surprised me. I had a certain drug insurance plan and it covered my Actonel which I took once a week. After the first of the year I swithed plans and it no longer covered Actonel but it does cover Bonevia which I only take once a month and I love that!! :) Its just strange that the new plan would cover a med you only take once a month.
