Hi,

My name is Stacey, I have 3 children ages 2 & 1/2, 6 & 15 years. My youngest daughter Lauryn is the reason I have joined.

Lauryn has always been "small" on growth charts, she hung in around 5% until 9 months of age & has since fallen off. Her head size had always been alright until now, now that's not on there either. She has had speech trouble which I've been ignored by her doctor. Told she would just start talking later. By things I've read up on, by now she should have a great vocabulary speaking 400 words & 75% of which should be understood "by strangers" however Lauryn speaks not quite 20 words & we cant even understand her half the time.

The worst part was friday morning Lauryn went into a siezure while at a routine doctors appointment for my 15 year old son. The doctor was there, thankfully & she was then admitted to the hospital for cat scan, blood & urinalysis & 24 hour observation. All tests came back normal. She needs to see a pediatric neurologist in another town, we're hoping that appointment date/time come today.

In the meantime I'm just worried & scared, wondering what could possibly be going on with my little girl.

Is there anyone here that has a child with similar symptoms? Any advice I could get would be SO helpful. Please.

Stacey

Hi Stacey,
I am so sorry to hear about your little girl. Why don't you post this question in the Child Neurology forum of Braintalk? There are many experienced and knowledgeable parents there who will be happy to share their experience with you.
Welcome to BrainTalk, sorry you have the need to be here, but glad you found us.

Lisa

Also Stacey, consider that maybe your daughter isn't able to absorb the nutrients that she needs to grow - I have a friend whose two children were extremely small for their age, and they were diagnosed as having a "failure to thrive" since they were off the charts for growth (12-pound toddlers, etc.). It turns out they had a problem with malabsorption due to gluten, and since eliminating it from their diet, are back on the "normal" side of the growth charts. Push for a lactulose-to-mannitol test (swallow the sugar, collect the urine) to see whether your daughter is able to properly absorb her food. Lack of nutrients could certainly affect speech and other problems. I usually post in the Gluten Sensitivity Forum here on Braintalk...good luck! My son was very sick, and I had to do most of the research to find out WHY myself (and with the help of Braintalk). It could very likely be a gastro problem!
